How many of you have revved over 7K in a ZE

Post by mazdaspeedmx_3 »

I just wanna see how many of you have actually revved your ZE's over 7000 without messing anything up
i've revved her over 7000 atleast a 100 times she still purrs like a kitten
hgallegos915 had a friend once ....and his ZE dropped a valve from over revving .....who know how high it was over revved but that must mean all of them are like that one

This may sound dumb, but if it is so easy to drop a valve in the ZE due to a weak valve train, is there a relatively cheap way to strengthen it? This is one area of the engine I haven't played with too much, though my understanding of the engine electrical systems has been growing at an unprecidented rate.

The reason I ask is that I'm hoping to purchase a ZE in the near future but I don't want to kill it and have my money go to waste. I don't want to go DE because the additional performance of the ZE appeals to me.
I drove an 88 Celica Altrac once that was rated at 200 hp, and weighed 3000 lbs. I loved it. The same power in our lighter cars would be awesome.

So is there a way of insuring I don't drop a valve that is in my low price range?

Sorry for sounding unedjicated in this matter.

Easy, get some DE valve retainer springs. I am planning on that when i get my kl31 cams.. someday. In the meantime.. no going over 6500 with my ze. The bottom end can handle around over 7000 rpns.. its just that flawed valve springs.

Only a few times when i first started dragging, maybe 7200-7500 once or twice, not often, but I dont see the point. My car hits 7000 regularly for the last 3 year and still runs. The redline is there for a reason, and I like a working car.

Damn why would they set the rev limiter so high when the engine cant handle anywhere near that? Its pointless.

In my gsr(integra that is), its impossible to over rev the engine unless i redline a gear then accidentally downshift.

I always took my ZE to 7,000 and no more..and i dropped a valve twice in my MX-3. So i switched over to the K8 valvetrain(Same as the KL-DE). I then proceeded to test the valvetrain to my satisfaction which was to punch out and hit the rev limiter, which is at 7500 RPM, and hold it there for a few secs....then listen for any ticking...and proceeded to do it several more times. LOL. Now my valvetrain has met my standards...and i still only go to 7,000 RPM when racing...no need to go any higher.

was it hard to change the k8 valove train? did u just change springs? or evrything? dayum.. u think its safe to go 6500? what does a dropped valve sound like? my engine sometimes ricks but rarely, runs good tho. its kl01 cams tho... isnt the drop valves in the kl31 cammed ze?

Every engine is different, for example i had 2 or 3 diff KLZE and dropped valves in every single one, not going over 7,000. But my friends probe i put the ZE in has never dropped a valve, and its been over 1-1/2 years and he has hit the limiter several times and that car sees 7,000 Rpms alot.

I bought this special tool to chnage the valvetrain with the heads on the car, and at the same time upgraded t the Colt 210 cams. Not hard, i have done this valvetrain at least 3 times and its gets so easy after a while..haha. I changed Valve springs/retainers/locks.

Well whats kinda nice about our engine setup is when u "crack" a retainer u can hear a relatively loud ticking that will increase with RPM. This means the valve will drop soon...so stop driving it, or get where u need to go quick..haha. Dropping a valve is when the retainer comes apart and THAT will be very noticeable..lol. The engine will not wanna idle, andif the valve actually drops all the way down in the cylinder can cause some nasty damge to both the head, pistons, or block.

Not really, if you want to you can, it's the driver's choice if they wish to push it into redline or not. Some people do 7200 at the drag strip. It leave it open to drivers, but it's their responsibility, so don't come crying cause you broke a motor reving it to 7800

But apparently not much further than that eh? At least from the sound of the thread below.. sounds like you wont be going much further on that ZE.
