AriesDude - 1994 Blaze Red RS (BP swap)

Post by ariesdude »

This is my beloved RS

I recently found a wrecked 95 protege ES with a 1.8L BP in it. So i am preparing to swap it into my mx-3. This is a new gen BP and looks much like the B6DE - but there some major obvious differences.

Since i have the donor - i am going to swap in the harness and ecu too - but i will try to check if the new gen BP is a true PnP for B6DE cars.

I am hoping for a lot more kick because the b6de had been severely abused by the previous owner - there was no engine oil when i got it and it was overheating all the time because of low coolant.

Keep it up dude you are almost there. Tell me how things hook up. I was thinking after I'm done with this MX-3 I am going to do another.

Swap the ECU harnesses and ECU and you should be pretty set.

Keeping it an Automatic, huh?

Interesting.

Theoretically it should work... but make sure everything plugs up before you drop her in.

I am done with the swap -I just did a test drive - it was awesome. I couldnt use the BP ECU and wiring harness. This BP ECU is an integrated tranny & engine controller while mx-3 has separate controllers. Also the BP harness plugs for the dash lights and stuff were entirely different. The engine side plugs were amazingly similar. So long story short - its running with the b6 ECU & harness for now. B6DE harness will plug-in to the new gen BP - there are a few minor changes to be made to the b6de harness. The BP has only one PRC solenoid whereas b6de uses 2. I had to swap the wiring that goes to the injectors and the wiring that goes to starter & alternator.

A few minor problems to take care of is to rectify a tranny code and install my old ground kit.

Are those the right interior pics? It almost looks like an automatic if I didn't know any better.

Yeah it is automatic and it is a pretty easy swap and runs great with the B6 ECU. Most everything is plug n play and i did it in 2-3 days (i havent done anything like this before and didnt have anyone to help me either).
Few differences are
-Use the O2 Sensor from B6
-Use the starter/alternator harness from B6
-Use the injector harness from B6
-Get a PRC solenoid from B6 and leave it plugged into the harness (BP uses only one PRC solenoid).

I have already started work on splicing in the BP ECU (which is OBD2). I have identified the color codes/function in the BP harness - now i have to identify which wires to splice into for the mx-3 dash harness (because the connectors are different). I will keep everyone posted....

I finally wired up the BP ECU properly - here's the list of wires that need to be spliced in the dash harness.
Image

Also the B/L wire from the old transmission harness has to be spliced into the same color wire in the new harness.

The fuse box connector from the old engine harness has to be spliced into the new one - the wires are all the same color - just the connector is different. There will be one extra wire (B/R). It has to be spliced into the B/R wire in the next connector (in the fuse box).

There will be a few wires left in the mx-3 harness connector - they are not needed (since the ECU and transmission controller are integrated). Also there will be a few extra wires left in the protege harness too. They are not required either.

The BR/W and R/Y wires on the protege harness go to the OBDII connector along a with a 12V and GND. Try to salvage the OBDII connector (95 protege is OBDII) - So now my car is OBDII and has a connector - i am looking into interfacing a computer through the OBDII connector.
