What model MX-3 do I have?

Post by Arjen »

I bought a 1991 Mazda Presso, it's imported used into New Zealand from Japan. It has the word Eunos on the steering wheel.

The boilerplate in the engine compartment says E-EC8SE.

The engine is a V6 DOHC 24-valve, (1800 cc, I was told). There are no markings on the engine that I could see (without taking it apart, that is ).

It has ABS, Automatic Transmission, and apparently some form of climate control.

The MX-3 has been sold under different names. You seem to have a normal GS. But what exactly is your question?

My question is "What model MX-3 do I have?"

There are several issues with this car and it would be helpfull if I know which model it is.

For instance, I need a workshop manual for it, and my capabilities in the Japanese language are about zero (aangenomen dat je geen Almerense Japanner bent).

There is something wrong with the transmission or else the general engine tuning since the engine stalls often when idling with the transmission not on N or P, like at traffic lights. The car idles okay, but after a minute or so the transmission seems to kick in and kills the engine. Very annoying.

Another problem is that the HEAT light is constantly on. I vaguely remember having that same problem with an old Toyota Hilux Surf and I think I solved that by resetting the CPU. But several people tell me to cut the sensor wire.

Ok. Then your answer is that you have a GS. You can find the workshop manual in the main section of this site. Since you seem to be fluent in dutch you might also want to check out http://www.mazdamx-3.nl.

In the index you will find a complete forum on the automatic transmission. There seem to have been some problems with those.

The correct model for the car you have is a Eunos Presso Si. It is actually a little more up scale that the MX-3 GS

The ATX in this cars (MX-3) is a piece of junk unless an aftermarket ATX cooler was installed very soon after the car was originally purchased.

The Cars in Japan have a different sensor archtecture than the MX-3 sold in the America's or Europe or OZ. Looking at the online manuals for cars sold in these countries may point you in the right direction but not totally answer your questions The "Heat" light is a Japan only warning and there will be no reference to this in any of the online manuals.

Hey, thanks for the link, mx.

When I was adding fluid to the ATX I noticed a crack in the air intake hose; when I leaned on it with my hand the engine stalled. Despite the immaculate look of everything under the hood (looks like a rebuild engine and all rubber components look new) this hose has dried out. So this may have solved the stalling and oscillating. Will do a testdrive to confirm.

The ATX fluid level was low and I added about half a liter. Now it's a bit too high. But still no improvement; the car jumps from a standstill in forward and reverse. Difficult to take off and to drive slowly.
