Standalones
Ok guys help me out here...I am going to go this route. Those who have DONE this I have a few questions.....
1. How much of the stock wiring do I have to take out?
2. WHat about the sensors in the transmission and master cylinder and random others?
3. Does any standalones have a built in rev limiter for launches? I think I might run coilpacks....no prob right?
4....I HATE TUNING!! What is the easiest to tune?

MUH HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA WELCOME TO THE DARK SIDE!!!!!!!!!!!
Man it seems complicated but its really not. Are you good with wiring at all? Its basically a glorified cd deck that youre installing.
With my car, I took ALL the stock harness out. The thing is.. like say the warning light for the brake fluid level.. that just goes directly to the gauge and dosent go through the main engine harness. There will be a few things that did go through the ecu harness.. but you can just splice them in later to make them work. Unless its something that is directly controlled by the ecu in which case you would have to have both the stock ecu and standalone systems running at once and just have the standalone for tuning. I dont think its like that in our cars since theyre older. Now you would have problems if you were to do this in a mercedes benz or something.
Its so straight foward though. Probally the most difficult part will be wiring up the distributor since you have to know what wire goes where. Plus they have an internal coil. But that wont be an issue since youre going to be running coil packs.. You will still need the distributor for the cam angle sensor though. You can make a pretty cover to cover it up if you like, there will be just no wires going to it anymore.
Man there is so much stuff that a standalone will offer you. I can change my limiter to anything I want in about ten seconds. And launch control you say? Ohh dear.. I setup antilag on my car just for something to do. I can get 17 psi of boost just sitting still at 3000 rpm. I actually launched with it once and it made absloutely no sense. The tires were just instantly smoking. It was awesome. I HIGHLY recommend a haltech for you.. You should get an e6x which is the newer one. Rest assured I am here to help.. If you have any questions Ill help you no prob. Ill even send you my fuel maps.. The timing one will be perfect since I have a fairly tame tune in the car right now.
My opinion is pretty biased since I have a haltech. But in my eyes it is the best one to get. MS makes no sense, it goes by percentages.. which has something to do with volumetric efficency.. How stupid. Every other standalone is in milliseconds which is how it should be.
You have a wideband o2? Because you will NEED it...

Hahaha. Microtech actually has base maps and such for boosted b6 engines. Installs in a few hours and has good support (like haltech im sure) Derrick at corksport sells this kit and has succsfully installed this in many b6 and bp cars including their drag car.

Hi Jarid,
I dont think you can go wrong with either the Link, Haltech or Microtech, once you get it installed and tuned properly it will be a night and day difference between your current setup with the stock ECU, SAFC and RRFPR.
I am actually considering going the Haltech route myself since it is quite popular where I am located.
If money isnt an issue you may also want to look at Tec3 system that Racing Mazda specialize in also. I have read of some amazing results on Miatas with that setup.

ok well, my vote is for the Mega Squirt, ive never used one myself, but ive read all their doccumentation. and it seems very simple. Not only that, but the price is very attractive. about 20-30% of what a haltech might cost you.

ok by far the Tec3 is the best, but for 2500 bucks it damb well better be. rember the biggest HP mazda motors by racing Mazda all are run on this.
but i went with an SDS. i dont have it in just yet but its sweet, and easy as hell to install, no more MAF
and i dont need a Laptop to tune it. it has its own lcd screen
the Haltec is way over rated. but good for the price.
