The Mazda RX-9 is an advanced concept that came out on top in this year’s Michelin Design Challenge. It’s a hybrid featuring a 2.5L V6 and wafer-thin electric motor, but features a couple of technologies not seen before in the race for higher fuel mileage.

James Owen Design is the one-man firm responsible for penning the vehicle’s shape. The slick skin features electrostatic collectors that can collect electrical charges that build up on the exterior panels while driving through dry air. The electricity is store in capacitors that can then feed the hybrid drivetrain along with the onboard regenerative braking.

Um, I don't really care for it.

I think:

1. Its looks to long
2. No windshield, fine to try something new, but not practical
3. Looks like you have to lay down to drive it.
4. if no rotary, call it something other than rx
5. I dont mind the front grill look
6. It looks like a boy scout wood racer

The Boy scout wood racer's were in most cases designed for areodynamics...
Considering the cost of gas... expect to see alot more of this style...

Remember the Lexus' from Minority Report... Those weren't just movie cars.. they were concept cars..

I wouldnt say this is for the design of the car, more the wheels and how they work. The car wont look like that, theres no where to sit :)

Yeah that makes no sense to me either since RX actually meant that it was a rotary model, at least up until this point... it just seems odd.

engine blew up after 8000 if you knew a few tricks... otherwise 5-6k....

That's not a reliable engine and was still being modified @ mazda for race applications until the mid 90s....when JGTC banned non piston motors...
