V6 Oil cooler issue

Post by mx3autozam »

When I swapped my ZE in it leaked oil from teh oil cooler. The filter is tight and it dripped like crazy.. Got a gasket from Mazda and it didn't help it and it still leaked. Took that off and made one with some high temp gasket paper and used some RTV sealent on it.It did not leak I was happy. Its been about 4 days and i've stopped driving the car because of the leak is back. Has anyone else encountered this and what is the best solution

Thanks
John

Have you checked the oil pressure?
maybe u have excessive oil pressure casuing a leak, however in all likelyhood your oil light would be on ( if it is working properly).

Also, it is rare but the cooler can have a spilt in it is very hard to see.

I would take it off and check for any hairline fractures.

Cheers

May sound dumb, but there are those that have forgotten the previous oil filter rubber ring behind when changing their filters and end up with 2 rubber rings between the filter and the oil cooler. Check to make sure you only have the one from the filter itself and that's it. If what Wino says is true, I believe that the old K8 oil filter would be the same and if you still have it (the old K8 ) trying swapping that oil filter mount on.

Very true,
Check to make sure there is not two gaskets or if any of the old gasket material is still on the cooler.

I belive theres 2 gaskets. One u have to take of that huge a-- bolt and one above near the top of the oil cooler theres another gasket. Maybe the top one is shot.

John, I wasn't referring to the gaskets that mount the oil cooler itself but the rubber rings that already come with every oil filter itself. Sometimes when the oil filter is replaced the old rubber rings gets stuck or inadvertantly left behind. Then the new filter is crewed on andthen you'll have 2 rubber rings between the oil filter and the mount. That may possibly account for the leakage, but a wild a-- guess at this point.

The housing maybe cracked, did you inspect it when you had it off?

I once had a oil pressure sensor that actually leaked out the end.

No theres another one below it. When u take out the filter theres a big a-- bolt and then the unit drops and theres an o-ring there.
