Hidden aux port in OEM stereo, updated

Post by mamoo »

So I pulled the stereo from my MX, and checked the ports in back. The only free port was a really strange plug I've never seen. It had a plastic cover, which, when removed, exposed a round jack with many holes. It looks sort of like an S-Video port.

I went down to the friendly neighborhood auto parts store, and they didn't have anything that fit.

Any thoughts on this doohickey? I'd love to wire it to a male stereo mini jack and thereby to my iPod.

Second question, how do I actually play music from the aux port? There doesn't seem to be an aux button on the face plate.

Thanks a bunch.

That is cause it is for the factory CD player. It is turned on by a button on the factory CD player. I think you just need to give up and buy a newer radio that has an I-Pod connection.

Pioneer deck + $100 pioneer ipod adapter = iPod goodness controlled like a CD changer and it charges it too.

I'm gonna eventually get one of these myself so I can shove my iPod in the glove box. Until then, MP3 CDs with ID3 tag support are good.

cheap buggers like us ;) might want to try this if you're handy with a soldering iron. As far as I can tell the head unit connector described here is the same as the MX-3:

for us cheap Canadians, unwilling to pay Digikey's obscene shipping charges north of the 49th, you might try the "ETA-13 male 13 pin DIN plug" from

http://www.kenselectronics.com/lists/micplug.htm

I'll be trying it in the future, so until then I can't confirm the fit, but it looks right. I emailed Ken and he estimated US$30 plus shipping to make the cable.

You could always just buy an Itrip.. they cost anywhere from $30 to $80 depending on the brand you get.. they allow you to broadcast on a local FM band of your own choice.. you then just tune your factory radio to the same frequency and BAM.. Ipod music in your ride without buying a new stereo.. How do I know it works? ;) Cause I have one.. I can post a pic later tonight if you want. You can get them anyplace Ipods are sold and some places where they arent even ;) Cheers

eh i have an old pioneer mosfet stereo, all i did is bought that adapter on ebay for like 4 dllrs and turns your auz port into rca inputs, great for any mp3 players including ipods. I connect by 2 gig nano in there and its quite nice.
