New to mazda, and to mx-3's

Post by getready »

Hey, i previously owned hondas/acuras, the only mazda i've ever been in was my friend's rx-7(very fun ride). Anyway, i messed up my accord Image , so i got a 1993 mx-3. I'm going to auto school, focusing on high performance engines and chassis fabrication, so this little guy is going to be my little project car :) Anyway, here she is

hey whats up

as for plans, i'm still looking around your site for possible ideas. As i said, i'm not really familiar with mazdas, at all. Since i'll be studying highperformance engines, i guess maybe a swap/turbo, but i've always thought that you shouldn't swap unless you at least double the hp, right? Unless the motor was basically free or something.

How much hp do these 4cyl. come with stock? I've been reading about escort gt and probe gt swaps, do these yeild significant gains? Or is the 6cyl swap more common?

Sorry to ask so many questions, i'm just not too familiar with these cars, that's all :)

Sounds like you will want to search for BPT swap, or BP swap

i would tell you what a 93' 4cyl has for horsepower, but i dont want to make a new member cry :?

yeah most people with the 4cyl have been swapping in the bp ( escort gt, protege lx , tracer of some sort) that is 127hp 114 ftlbs or there is the BPT, from teh gtx wich is 180 hp or the GTR wich has a bigger ball bearing turbo wich is 210hp , ...
93 323- BP swap,Pacesetter header, magnaflow, highflow cat, pacesetter catback,Rx7vaf+filter, Adv timing, Fidanza Adj camgears, GTx front bumper, EGT side skirts, Espec headlights, LED upper spoiler, GTR midwing, familia rear garnish, Mx3 carpet +all seats,

haha, trust me, i've been disappointed in the hp dept. before *(my accord had 98 whp) so yeah, let me know man! I've been looking around, but its not in any of the FAQs (at least i havent found it yet). I know that i dont have the SE, because there are cloth seats. But there's a/c and power locks, so that's good :) and no heavy sunroof!

yeah, that's what i thought, the gt probe swaps. Can they handle much boost? Is it a ford or a mazda engine? 4 or 6 cyl?

Thanks!

lol, well i dont even think the sohc has your old accord beat in power
but it looks like you have a 4cyl RS, so your best bet is to search for
"BPT"
http://www.atlantamx3.com/mocaforum/vie ... 0b03a16269

or "BP"
http://www.atlantamx3.com/mocaforum/vie ... 0b03a16269

...and sift through the results
The "general" rule of thumb is if you have a 6cyl, swap a 6cyl (ZE,DE,etc), etc.

welcome BTW 8)

I just got my mx-3 too. I've got the 4cyl 1.6L DOHC. Others members suggested tne KLZE swap. Which would be better the KLZE or the BP or BPT? I'm really confused here.

Also I read somewhere that my engine has like 100 hp and like 90 ft-lbs torque how accurate is that info?
It ain't done 'til it's done right.

First off, welcome to our family here. The RS model you have is 88hp. I have the same model except, mines is a automatic.... but I'm trying to get prepared now to do the MTX swap for that. By the way, your ride looks clean. heck, you even have a rear cargo cover! Most MXers don't...... it's rare, and Mazda wants a shat load for them new!
If you fall, then get back up........Luck favors the prepared

Ya welcome and cungrats on leaving honda and coming to a real family!! =) j/k

For the cargo cover I have one that I used to mount some 6x9's. Sence I am getting my sub box in that is not going to fit anymore. And I need to make custome stands for the 6x9's now. So if anyone wants it for some 6x9's and it worked great for mounting 6x9's!

i'm not ditching honda forever :D

Yeah, it seems like a sweet car, but to tell you the truth, i havent even seen it in person, yet. I'm picking it up tonight 8)

I probably wont be doing a full swap for another 6 months perhaps, but i like to research my stuff beforehand. This school is pretty sweet, i can fully prepare the motor and everything, and then install it during/after class. Since a lot of the course covers forced induction, i'll be preparing the engine for turbo/supercharging. And the other part of the course focuses on suspension and roll-cages, etc, so the car will probably see some of that as well

Expect to see some progress once i get everything off the ground!

What motor is in the car now? a 4 banger or 6?
It looks like a 4 cyl b/c they came with the hatch garnish (black thing just behind th hatch glass) but you say it has power windows and locks which I thought were only on V6s. (it might have been an option on the 4 cyl though)

Anway, if you have a V6 do the ZE swap, if you have a 4 cyl do the BPT or BP swap and turbo it. I'm not a 4 cyl guy, but I heard that the BP is a better platform for turbo if you are getting new internals. If you just want a turboed factory motor to play with and don't expect huge amounts of extra boost the BPT from the 323 GTX is a great motor. It has a webbed block and forged crank.

The V6s have crappy rods, but pistons are ok for ZE V6 has pretty large valves and a decently flowing intake and head so you wouldn't need any work on that unless planning a race prep engine or massive boost.

Welcome and good lcuk with your MX-3.

PS, I bet after some time playing with the MX-3 you forget about Honda. You'll find that Mazda has done a great job designing the motor to be funciotnal, easy to work on, reliable and strong enough to hold a good bit of power without much modification. Also, you have a unique car.
