Protege LX road speed sending unit

Post by ryanlindenberg »

for those of you running a protege LX tranny, what speed sensor are you using? does the mx-3 one work? i've currently got one from a 2nd generation V6 mx-6 with a manual tranny. it works but it doesn't fit quite right. it seems to be a bit too long or something. i have to rotate it to the side in order for it to fit down close to the tranny housing itself (since i rotated it i can't put that little bolt/screw through to hold it in). i've been using it like this for awhile but it slowly leaks tranny fluid out through the hole. just wondering what kind you guys are using so i don't have to keep putting in tranny fluid. i need one that is electrical, not the cable driven type. thanks for the help guys/gals.

I've tried the Mx-6 v-6 speedo in mine. I've had two of them and they both broke off inside the transaxle. It does fit...somewhat, but instead of getting another and being out over 100 bucks, I'm not running that speedo gear ever again. Their are no others that will fit to my knowledge besides the mechanical driven gears. I do know that the Mx-3 Rs speedo gears for the F series gearbox will not work. The v-6 gear from the Mx-3 will not work either. My only option was to run the cable driven gauge cluster from the 92-93 RS. That works.

Have you tried to swap the Helical drive gear from the mechanical sensor to the electronic sensor? Another possibility is swaping the differentials speedo drive gear ring. That wouldn't be worth it unless you installed a LSD. Autometer Speedo would be another pricy option.

yea i had 2 of them break off in my tranny too. if i turn it sideways it will slide right in and works fine...i'll probably just fabricate a little 2 pronged fork that wraps around the sensor and then have a screw go through the other end of the fork and into the threaded hole where you are supposed screw the sensor into. that way it will hold it in there. it will be cheap and i won't have to swap out clusters...

thanks for the info.

bug derrick at corksport. They had to machine the case to fit a new sensor. not sure which one they installed. Just ask him about Jarid's car.

will the airbags still work without the car knowing the speed since they are not meant to deploy at too slow a speed.

I too had tried the mx6 speedo and broke it, damn thing jammed in shifter, could only do 3rd gear when i fist did my swap.

now i have the bo speedo with a kia electrical screw on but kia has 3 wires and 94 mx3 has 2, any thoughts?

i think they will still work...i don't have an airbag light on. of course i don't have the factory ecu either. i don't know if the airbag light is run through the ecu or not.

Airbag system is not ran thru engine ECU controls.

IF your trying to get the electric spedo to work with the G25 trans. you can use your MX3 sensor, i did. all you have to do is make a half inch shim to hold it 1/2" off of the trans. i used a piece of 1/2" plexy i had laying around, and then used a dremmil and a sanding bit and a drill to make the holes nesssairy for the spedo to fit inside it as well as bolt to the trans. and then RTV it up and your good to go, ran mine for over a year like that, and never had a problem, spedo worked great.

still runny an elctric spedo with the AWD trans, took a bit more effort though.

The g25 is a protege tranny?
so a 94 electric speedo from the orignal mx3 works. I lifted wth 2 nuts and a longer bolt.
This is an awesome fix, and I wish I would have known 3 years ago when I did the swap.

Will it leak as the o-ring is now above the tranny?

Thanks a lot :)

This would be an awesome fix.

yes, their is 1/2" differance in length, so if you put a spacer in there it will solve the problem, the spedo was rite on.
