6th gear for my GSR
6th gear for my GSR
Just an idea that me and a buddy have been toying around with:
I bought my 94 mx3 GS used from a friend. It already had a 2.5 v6 swap that I helped install about 7k before I purchased it. I picked it up for $2800 in perfect condition and just 129,000 miles on the odometer.
The whole time he ran it with the swap he complained that it was always tach'd at about 3500 rpm at freeway speeds and that the culprit was the stock 1.8 liter tranny. He also mentioned that someone made a "add on" 6th gear for escort GT's and that he was almost positive that it would work on the V6 tranny, and that the only real difference in the two trannys were input and output shafts.
my question is 1st is this feasible and 2ond has anyone else herd of this?

i'd like to b first to say that i'm jealous that u got a ZE'ed car for $2800 that you actually helped put in....
as for the addon itself i personally can't say one way or another if its possible....but as for fitting the V6 i doubt it.
if the 4cyl and v6 were interchangable i'm sure someone woulda already tried taking the AWD tranny for the BPT and matting it w/ the ZE
i'm sure it's possible depending on how much custom work u wanna do....but it doesn't seem plausible as a simple swap.

Well it actually depends. Some of the 4 banger Mazda motored cars used a version of the G series tranny. If the Escort GT was one of the cars to use the G series then it may very well fit. Clearance with the frame rail in the engine bay would be an issue, but you'd have to find the 6th gear addition for us to really be able to tell you more. Also, I am curious as to how you would shift into the said 6th gear and how they would get it attached to the primary and secondary shafts of the tranny, also how would it be lubricated and how did they cover it. I honestly think it is a farse, but you could prove e wrong.

Actully it fit's in the standerd case with out to many issues as i
have seen it done on a vairiant of the "G" serise box.
Basicly 6th gear is slotted in where reverse goes and the reverse
cog setup is played with, bit od a costly exercise when you really
should mate the klze with the klze transaxle or 4.11 diff at least
and do like gro and play with the fith gear to lower its ratio even more.

I swapped out the 5th gear set way back in 1999 with the 5th gear set for used in the 1gen FWD 626 dropped the ratio from .80 down to .68 with the 4.11 final highway rpm are about 3000 at 120kmh.
I just picked up the version of the G25 used with the RF-T in the 323's
Gears are as follows
1st 3.454
2nd 1.833
3rd 1.310
4th 0.914
5th 0.680
F/D 3.41
The ones made in 2002 & 2003 are the ones to look for internally they were beefed up (main shaft and syncros were made stronger) also the throw-out forks have been improved as well. These were made for the brute low end torque put out by the RF-T and should hold together into the 350-400ft/lb range. I know of someone running there 323 at 345hp and putting down almost 500 ft/lb through one of these trannies.
Only problem not a direct fit to the K block

I'm gonna do some research and see if I can find the add on thing I was talking about but basicly as it was decribed to me it sets up the 6th gear like a celica GTS tranny with reverse at the top left next to 1st and 6th at the bottom right. but thank you for all the info.
this may sound strange but even with my car running at like 3500 I still pull a decent 36.6 miles to the gallon on the highway. I was really impressed with that. it was after a fresh set of plugs, synthetic oil change and new cap and rotor, but still I think that is damn good.

Questions for Yoda or anyone else whos done the same. I've been looking at a tranny swap for ages and my petrol bill is making me ill.
So if I get the 1st gen fwd 626 gearbox is it a straight swap?
Up until what year are the trannys in the 626 the same ?
Is it only the 2.5 V6 tranny that I'm after?
And besides that how is the acceleration affected in say 1st 2nd and 3rd?
What I'd really like is the first 4 gears as they are now .. perhaps a little longer in second .. and then 5th more like an overdrive so the rpm's drop right down. I can't see the point of 5th being geared on the MX3 the way it is now. I really think mazda got it wrong when they put a ratio like that on 5th.
I'll probably get shot down for saying that but i got broad shoulders...

Re: i
I like 5th gear, it's a nice highway cruzing gear actually where it'll pickup pretty good without downshifting. It's a second gen 626 with the 2.5 V6Chemical wrote:Questions for Yoda or anyone else whos done the same. I've been looking at a tranny swap for ages and my petrol bill is making me ill.

Well thats cool nd4spd but you already have the 626 ratio's and also the extra torque. Mines stock with a worn- ish clutch and slow synchros in 2nd and 3rd so when I have to change it I want to alter the ratio's as much as I can- preferably without changing cogs or having to mod anything else. What would be perfect is 5th with 3:55 :1 like my old Holden EK- was such a cruise mobile.
