You may not need to change the whole transmission. There is a common problem with the Mazda MTX on cars in the southern US with the 5th gear and reverse due to the uses of ATF in the MTX gearboxes right from the dealer. Mazda only recommends that ATF be used in sub-freezing conditions. Fifth gears is externally mounted on the gears case. Fluid has to circulate between the main gear case and the satalite enclosure to lubricate the gears and syncros. The passages can become blocked with particles or sludge if the ATF becomes over heated and the shift fork gets jammed up Fifth gear can be repaired without removing the transmission after removing only the sheetmetal cover as seen after removing the left wheels. The parts should cost less that $100 the only problem is that most shop won't to the job this way. If you do replace the transmission do not refill it with ATF use 75W90 gearbox oil instead.

I replaced my 1993 1.6 5spd with a 1991 323 tranny. Cost me 150.00 at the junk yard compared to 450.00 for a mx-3 tranny. 4th and 5th gears are slightly different but barely noticable. It fit perfect with no changes and there are LOTS of 323 trannies out there.
