Yes, the SOHC tranny will not last too long on a BP. As for what tranny and bolt ups, I don't know because I have no intentions on doing any swaps. Check the faq.

The F-series trany found on the sohc will bolt up and yes it will last as long as u dont constanly rag it out. Had mines for a year on that setup. Like peeling out pop the clutch at a high rpm. U can even use the trans from the 1.6 dohc mx-3 but u'll have to use the sohc axle passanger side. the half shaft for some reason doesn't bolt up to the bp. But u'll need to use the 1.6 flywheel and clutch for the f-series it will bolt up to the BP.

U cab even use the G-series found in the Protege LX/Escort GT which is a bigger better stronger shorter gear trans. for that u'll need the Protege LX half shaft, axles, tranny's top mount, flywheel and clutch. the spental on the g-series (22) is larger thean the f-series(20). hopes thats helps out .

I wouldn't say that the F tranny won't last with a BP. Mazda switched to the F on the BP DOHC back in late in 1994 and is used with the 1.8 and 2.0L in the newer Protege's with the exception of the MPS in North America.

On the B5-ZE project I am involved with right now we are converting to MXT-75 because it will handle over 400ft/lb where the G is limited to around 250ft/lb. Plus there are aftermarket gear ratios and upgrade parts available for this tranny and well.
