do you think i need a new starter

Post by mxprecidia »

Wellfor a while now, everytime I got into my car and try to start it, it would just click. No crank. It would take me quite a few tries until it actually cranked, and then it would start. Now it wont crank at all. Do I simply need a new starter? Plugs are not bad at all. Thanks.

I'll bet you need a new starter. I've replace min 4 times now... rebilt ones suck... the second time i got paranoid and got the lifetime warentee on it :P glad i did too

If you get underneath you car go you where you downpipe meets the rest of the exaust and it will be right above you, yours should be the same color and stuff as mine, and its a black cylinder with a minisilver cylinder ... i forget it its on to or bottom, but i think its on top.

one bolt you have to remove from down there, two on top you take out the battery to see them.

take a look around you get it...

I had/have this problem with my Integra. I removed the Started, opened it up, and cleaned it. It's a little risky, but what can happen to a broken
Starter.

If you want to know of the starter is good or not, here is a quick,
simple method:

- you need 2 people: one tries to start the engine, the other one has to
check for voltage on the starter or just listen to it.
- When the start is attempted the other guy has to hear a "click" near
the starter, or see if there is voltage. If there is either a "clicl" sound or voltage (this can even be checked with a 12Volt light bulb), then the
starter has to be replaced.

Mine was very bad, but after i cleaned it it works a little better... I know
I have to change it, but it still works.

WHAT TO DO WHEN IT DOESN'T CRANK AT ALL ANYMORE???

Here's what you try: (It might sound funny, but it always works)

Grab a thin metal pipe (like the one you use to jack the car)
And hit the starter (almost anywhere will do) You just have to hit it 1 or 2
times, and it wil crank your engine.
Watch out however, not to make a short circuit, with the wire connected
to the starter. If you do, however, don't panic, it is not that bad, the
the battery won't die or anything... I did this several times, be careful,
however not to have any inflamable nearby!!!

sure enough it was the starter. solenoid or not, i replaced the whole thing with a NEW starter for $250 and i'm so happy every time it starts now. i would suggest tapping the solenoid (smaller cylinder thing on the starter) when the car doesn't want to start. if you can tap it and then the car starts, you have your answer to your problem. if not, check the online manual. section G has the full diagnostic procedure to determine what the problem is.
