Engine Coolant Levels Affect Start perofrmance.

Post by UKMX-3 »

I'm not 100% sure about this so i thought i'd seek clarification on this.

The electronic Choke mechanisim works by sensing engine temp, which it does by taking readings of the engine coolant temp.

If the engine coolant is running slightly low wouldnt that cause it to run slightly of, possible rich/lean at the wrong points?

reason i'm asking is that sometime i need to apply the throttle when starting to get the engine to catch and although im used to it I know that indicates that the choke mechanisim might not be working properly.

I thought it might be the coolant temp sensor, but i've realised my coolant is pretty low and that the problem may lay in that area.

Anyone got experience of this?

I developed a coolant leak and what I found was the engine would run at higher idle revs for a while after the temp gauge was in the normal range. I beleive this was caused by the mechanism not being able to determine the correct temperature as it measures from a point where there is no coolant present when the level is low. After the whole engine came up to operating temperature the revs would drop to normal.

I didn't notice a change in performance.

Also, my dad didnt exactly put 50 percent water/ 50 percent coolant
Probably something more like 60-65% coolant and the rest water.

What other problems besides startup can that cause? Should I change the coolant immediately?
