Most Power Attainable from my 1.6L DOHC

Post by Majin Vegeta »

hi everyone.

after spending approximately two weeks surfing through endless results yielded in searching this site, i have finally decided not to boost my car, nor perform any engine swaps.

i have the old familiar 94 RS 1.6L DOHC engine. i would like to squeeze out any power i can while retaining it's reliability. as you can see from my signature, i have another car that is already boosted, and this one is great at saving money when it comes to gas - (especially with the $3.00 gallon).

i was considering the Gude head package they offer;

A. Ported, Polished Head with Racing Valve Grind and High Compression Chambers,
B. Big Bore Throttle Body,
C. Bullfrog / Stinger Race Cams,
D. Flow Ported Intake Manifold

all of this for around $1,650.00

but then i read that Gude was not a great company to deal with unless you had a SOHC Honda.

i have read that we can use B6ZE Miata performance parts and what not - can any/all of you please add something to this post as to what can be done to this engine to beef it up as little more?

please reply - any help is greatly appreciated.

It sounds like you want to stay N/A. so there is still alot out there. and all Miata B6ZE inturnals are interchangeable. Toda Racing is a good but EXPENSIVE source to obtaine parts (you pay for the name). Flyin Miata is another good source. when it comes to headers you will have to make your own, as the headers Cork Sport sells are not that desirable, But im sure they work. you can get pretty much what ever your looking for just depends on how much you want to spend.

Josh, thanks for your reply. if you had $2,000.00 to throw into this engine, what would you do first?

also, what gains should i expect with cams? low and mid range power?

for 2 grand i'd do exhintake cam and adjustable cam gear / header (corksport) / a port and polish on the head / lightweight flywheel / and nitrous (50-75 shot) / intake / exhaust ... that should give you some decent hp at the wheels

as of right now, (i have had the car since new - bought in 1995 as a showroom hold over), i have only modified the following:

H&R springs
MX3 GS Struts
16" low profiles
Unorthodox under drive pulley
PRM intake
Custom 2.25" cat back

i want to get more power out of it, but i don't want to make it a street racer,

i definitely want to get more power out of it - so far your suggestions are great - please keep them coming and don't mind my naivete!

Well, if it were mine.....

I'd dump the money into the STI, but thats just me. I'm sure you have your own goals for this car.

Back on subject..What really defines street racer status? A fully built head package seems to fit the bill. Than again, I talked to Bill Gude yrs ago about the same thing you want. He described the gains to be around 30hp. If you are serious, then I would suggest something a little different.

I would fully balance the bottom end.

Get a set of higher comp. pistons. 10:1 or a little higher depending on what fuel you use. It wouldn't hurt to bore it out a little -- extra cc's is a good thing.

Slap a header/cams in.

Aluminum fly and clutch.

Fuel controller.

Call it a day on the dyno.

for 2 K, i would do header, intake and cams, maybe a port and pollish. with that you could see maybe a 20 percent increase, depending on the cams. then i would do a NOS kit probably a direct port. easy to do and more power than a standard wet kit. you just have to drill and tap you intake runners on your manifold, easy stuff. then if you had some left over i would throw on some N/A BP injectors biege top (230cc i think). then a walbro fuel pump. and all that would probably cost around 2K, depending on how much work you did yourself. and easly and i mean easly you would see 150 to 160 to the wheels with the direct port NOS, and the other mods listed. thats at like an 80 shot, but keep in mind that thats would be per cylinder and you would probably make more than 160. im just guesstemating. or instead of the NOS kit i would go with some high comp pistons. which with everything but the NOS and adding the high comp pistons you could see 130 ish more or less (depending on cams and tuning). and N/A that would be a low to mid 16 range for the average driver. for a good driver maybe 15's it all depends, i would love to see someone do an N/A build up.

isn't direct port nitrous wet? and dry is right before or after the filter way before the intake manifold

its the same as a wet kit but x 4, so one jet for each cylinder. so you have your jet with the fuel and NOS in one jet. but you can get a dry Direct port also. but mostly its for people who run drag only. when you run just a dry kit your relying on your fuel system to provide the extra fuel needed. but a wet does all that for you so you dont have to, its safer and more reliable.
