I had the most luck with cork gaskets, my rubber gaskets always leaked. I think it was a Purolator kit that came with cork. I put a VERY thin layer of sealant on the pan (after cleaning it thoroughly), let it sit for about 10 minutes then put the gasket on it. While that is happening coat the top of the gasket and the tranny mating surface, let that sit 10 minutes or so, then put the pan on with the bolts finger tight. Let that sit about 10 minutes, then GENTLY torque them to spec (which is NOT VERY TIGHT).

I usually let things sit in between steps to give the sealant time to seap and to dry some (you shouldnt have much seapage at all. If you have a lot, you are using way too much sealant or you are tightening the bolts too tight). I also usually put a small amount of sealant on the threads of each bolt before I install it, since they dont get tightened much it helps keep them from backing out over time. The biggest cause of leaks is from overtorqueing the pan bolts. After they are hand tight, go back about 10 minutes later and give them about a 1/4 turn or so at most.

I always use Permatex non-hardening sealant. Its a thick red liquid, Autozone sells it in small round metal containers for $3 or $4 or so. Its good stuff and I never have leaks on anything I use it on. Use it once you will never use RTV (silicone) again, its good stuff.
