idling problem

Post by spano »

when i start my car, it usually idles at around 2000 rpms until i start driving it, and then once i get to a stop if i stop completely, it'll idle back and forth from 1000 to 1500 rpms and just keep going up and down. I'm thinking it's because my throttle is loose or maybe there's a problem with my throttle wires, but i'm no pro i have no experience with this stuff so i'm hoping anyone can help me out here

Idle issues similar to yours have been addressed in the V6 forum. It may be best to move this post to the 4cyl/6cyl forum.

Check to make sure that there is absolutely no cracks in the ribbed rubber intake tube between the VAF and the TB. The slightest little crack in the tube could cause this fluctuation. Make sure you have no air pockets in the cooling system. Ensure there are no leaks in any of the vaccum lines.

Woah.. IDLE at 2000 rpm? This is normal if you have just started the car on a cold morning, but at normal operating temperature your car should idle at 750.
It might be slow, but it's not a civic!

Does your idle go down after you drive the car for a while? It should be up high for a little bit when you first start the car: your idle control valve is kicking up your rpms a little bit, just like a choke on an old carburated vehicle. When the engine gets warm, and can run well without help, your idle control valve should let the idle drop back to about 750-800 or so. Check your idle control valve before you do anything.

Idle control

Post by BarrieMX3 »

My 4 cyl does the same thing, from around 1500 and drops to almost a stall. But it's not consistant. Some days are better than others.

All of these problem descriptions are consistant with Throttle Body issues. You can take the easy way out and just replace it. Or, you can clean it completely (Take it off the engine and take it apart) You will need 1 gasket and 1 seal from your mazda dealer. The online shop manual has information on how to adjust your TPS. I will be posting a FAQ on how to do this in a few days (need to check some information with my mazda mechanic).
