My favorite line of the whole article is the last:
From this swirling cloud of brain, Dan Barnes emerges, Sawzall in hand, and utters three simple words. "Chicks dig convertibles."

This makes the engine extremely loud and, as you know, noise equals power.
Dunno man.. I think this quote explains why so many people like those big fart cans on the back of their cars ;) LOL

Sweet sweet mockery, gotta love it. SCC's writers are usually the first to pounce on the ricers giving tuner enthusiasts a bad rap. Case in point, this article.

And I thought I was getting crazy with my car when I broke out the Air Chisle and Angle Grinder!!! They still better pray that the MX-6 doesn't have a boost controller and a fuel cut defencer or that guy is gonna get smacked down twice!!!

i have something to say about this. i am half way done reading this and i think i may feel sick. removing the whole exhaust and thinking it will add power? engines have to have some back pressure, i mean think about it remove it all? ok lets say i took off from the mani back....how do you think that will work out? not so good, and loud better???? not in my case mine fell off once and lets just say i didnt run 10's. and how many of us want to mess up our cars by cutting s--- i mean maybe some things but this guy just wants to beat his friend not race a fuel rail dragcar. how many people think it is the best idea to tape your air filter in your air box not only i dont think thats the main point but the thing is i would make fun of this kid. OH and the taking out your antenna to reduce drag ? lol

ok now that i am done reading most of that and skipped some, i now think this guy was kidding just mostly because how can you write for a car mag and be this dumb ?

Alright, I thought my last post hinted at the point, but I guess I'll have to be blunt about it so you guys don't think my favorite auto mag is pure crap. :?

They get tons of letters every month with varying degrees of ricer and/or uninformed contents. With this one, they decided to have some fun and make some fun at the same time. This guy wrote in that he's spent tons of cash in making his car look bling and now is embarassed that his buddy's MX-6 smokes him. He wants to know what he can do to fix it. So SCC, the kind fellows that they are, take his car off his hands and make it go fast(er). They simply cut the car down to near scrap to reduce weight and therefore E.T. times.

Anything in the article that you think indicates the authors are idiots is probably sarcasm. Removing antenna to reduce drag...I don't think even your most stupid ricer would think that'd actually do anything. It's funny. Removing the exhaust...put yourself in their position: You've got this kid's car and are writing a fun article and tearing the hell out of it. I imagine someone had the idea to remove the whole exhaust, and everyone there was all the more entertained because it sounded loud and terrible.

Really guys, don't read into that much, it's just a funny article that over-exaggerates the point that you shouldn't spend all your money on sparkles and chrome and then piss and moan because your car is still as slow as it was the day you bought it.[/i]

Your reaching wayyy out there, but I'm sure Dave would do it to a ricers car if they let him.

Old article too.

that statement makes me so mad lol

NO engines DO NOT need backpressure, they need to have a constant, fast exhaust stream (read: velocity). If you had six 1" (or so) pipes running each from an exhaust port that ran 12 inches or just enough to flow out to the bottom of the car, or out the hood for that matter, it would be optimum. The exhaust velocity would be fast and there would be no resistance on the valves.

That is true.. but you cant drive it on the street :)

But remember backpressure can help you @ lower RPMS. It creates a vaccume that starts to pull out the exhaust (depeneding on the optimum length of pipping used per pulse of the engine and the time it takes to escape the engine) Too small will cause back pressure @ higher RPMS and loose horsepower. Too big, and you can loose HP.

For example.. a 1.6L with no exhaust at all, will have less power than a 1.6inch per exhaust port 12 inches from the block at lower RPMS.
