New mods?
New mods?
I've been around here for a while and have done my fair share of searching but am wondering a bit more details on some of the mods I can do to help increase my horsepower. I own a 94 RS with a CAI, 2.25" cat back exhaust with a highflow cat. I know the miata cams blah blah but they offer a minimal gain from what I have read. I know the header situation is limited to that blue thing from corksport which does not even state a gain, so what else could I do without swapping right now, and where can I get these parts? Im wondering if any of the following items are possible or where to get them and what kind of improvement if any would be introduced to my engine by these items. I think it would be a good topic in the faq because every newbie asks the question but always gets mixed answers. Can I get a fuel rail maybe? fuel pressure regulator I know of but what kind of improvement am I looking at? Bored intake manifold? Bored throttle body? Things like that other than exhaust parts for once?

Or if you want to spend a little more find the turbo manifold off the B6T in your local junkyard or off ebay and slap it on your stock B6DE. All the B6 blocks have the oil cooled pistons and are basically the same blocks with small differences (pistons, oil lines etc.) and were made for boost. Turbocharging the stock motor is basically the same as swapping in the B6t but with a better flowing head and a little higher compression pistons which will react better with boost. I will be doing the turbo myself when I can get some cash.

It might be slow, but it's not a civic!

Keep you engine a lot cooler. Get a better radiator (can't remember which ones), and add dual aftermarket fans.
Then run a coolant that specifically says it will run your engine cooler. Also flush your coolant lines to clean out all the gunk. Get new temperature sensors, and an aftermarket four wire oxegen sensor.
Check out those things. Should give you something to do for a while. Cause well - it's a hobby

I have a 95 RS & got a very nice seat-of-the-pants power boost by advancing the timing a couple of degrees. Requires running higher octane fuel but worth it IMHO... and the mod itself cost nothing to do except a few minutes of your time. My .02...
I think Tunes67 may have done this one recently too.

Yes I have done that recently.. I advanced my timing to 12 degrees BTC.. manaul calls for 9-10 BTC.. But I only run premium fuel. 92 Oct or better if I can find it. If you advance your timing and run crap fuel of 89 or 87... you will get knocking and pinging and run the higher risk of getting Detonation.. you do NOT want to get detonation.. it will rip your pistons apart quite quickly and its nearly impossible to tell if its happening until its too late.. so if you do decide to mess with your timing.. do so realizing you need to run only the best quality gas you can get. Best of luck.

I did it by feel and then put the timing light on it to see where it landed. If you have better than 92 Oct gas available in your area.. you might be able to go a bit further.. The method I used "By Feel" was a slight twist.. take the car out for a drive.. find a nice steep hill.. have a buddy in the car with you.. Take the hill at wide open throttle... listen for knocking & pinging.. if you hear any.. tune it back down slightly and repeat the test. Having a buddy with you adds weight to the car so that if you are ever carrying a load you will know you are safe if you have to go distance. Safety margin more or less.
