HELP... with a strange noise....

Post by kaalman »

comming from the back of the machine on the side where the timing belt is...

I read this article http://www.mx-3.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=34784
and suspect something about the "The Pulley Noise !!!! (14K)"
vut since there are no pictures I could see and I even read something about an MP3 of the strange ticking noise, I would like to ask if anyone has theese two files... ?

the machine is running smooth and AFAIK normal, but when its colder, there's this noise in the range of 1500-2500 RPM for 10-15 minutes of first driving.
when motor is warming up the noise goes down, but it's still hearable at operating temp.

I remember that the noise came after replacing the timing belt and pulleys.

I'm a little concerned that something goes wrong if I leave it this way...
I tried search, but found only the above mentioned link

p/s: I'm new around, but am following this forum for over 2 years
p/s 2: my english is not the best, so I don't understand every single word... :)

It may help if you give us a little bit more information. Use as much space as you need to explain. A diminishing ticking noise in the winter is usually a normal sound for older (high mileage) MX's. Lack of oil reaching valve train until car warms up and oil flows faster. Of course, older car's oil pumps may get weak and tired over the years. There's the possibility that a valve adjustment may be necessary also, hard to say. Before my KLZE conversion, I minimized these "ticking" effects by changing my oil more frequently with a quality brand oil and in the winter if it didn't get into the garage, I always ensured that I had it "plugged in" (block heater). Hope this helps.

ok.. I'll try to explain it again and more precise...

I bought the car with 142tkm it's a 1992 V6, then at 145tkm precautiosly changed the timing belt+pulleys, the friction gears, which were the only thing hearable before the maintenance, and water pump and valve cover gaskets, and as I started the car after the timing belt change, there was this low ticking noise from the side where the timing belt is, somewhere lower between the water pump and the power steering pump...
so I thought, maybe somethings have to adjust to each other, and left it this way, but it's the same now for around 5tkm :( and now in winter the noise is louder, its synchronous to the RPM, and most hearable between 1500 and 2000 RPM. After about 10-15 km of normal driving, the noise gets quiet, but does not dissapear. I've removed the power steering belt and other belts, and started the car this way, but the noise was there... and then a few days ago, I've read the FAQ about the water pump and timing belt change. I use Valvoline 5W 50 synthetic oil, and the oil consumption is around 0.5l to 0.7l per 10.000 kilometers....

I hope this is enough information...

and another shock today, I've calculated 12l/100km of fuel consumption :(

dunno... which one ?....
since I had all belts removed but the timing belt, and the car had the same noise...and the tensioners and idlers were replaced with the timing belt
