Engine Misfires after a hard WOT

Post by fuxxy »

I've been having this problem lately, and I get the same results when I do this every time. However, I'm stumped as to why it's doing it , or even what I need to start looking at.

'93 Mazda MX3 RS
1.6L 16-valve SOHC
New Air filter, oil filter
New plugs, wires, distributor rotor&cap
Premium fuel

It seems that when I'm on the road, and get the urge to floor the accelerator for an extended period of time (at the very least, let it switch gears at WOT), the engine starts misfiring when the new gear is switched and the RPM's go down.
No matter what my speed, no matter what I do afterwards has any immediate results(Rev engine, let engine idle, put in neutral) The mis-fire stays apparent until I let off of the accelerator and let the motor idle for a couple of minutes.
The mis-fire has always been reproduceable, however, by the time I get stopped, the mis-fire has gone away.

this isnt just the rev-limiter? if your in WOT when you shift, you would most likely peg it

revving generates heat.

The only sensors that heat up when you rev are the O2 sensor and coolant temp sensor (but not by much).

I highly doubt your CTS is bad....so you might want to look into replacing the O2 sensor. You are supposed to every 60,000 miles, and it seems everyone on here thinks they last the life of the car.

Better fuel econ & performance for ~60 dollar replacement sensor sounds like a good deal to me.

I agree that my O2 sensor should be replaced.

When I say I'm at WOT, I'm not sitting out of gear doing it. This is on the road in gear, for example, trying to pass someone. The engine runs fine all the way up to when it shifts, and then starts misfiring when it switches gears.

Isn't there some sort of way I can check my ECU codes in my driveway, without a $300 'code reader'? My "Check Engine" light is not on, however I'd like to know what my car is thinking.
