1st gen BP or 2nd gen BP?

Post by Ruben MX-3 »

Lets see what you guys think about this.. jteezy wrote this in a post and i just wanted everyones two cents on the N/A version of both motors + after market support ect.. neways heres wut he had to say:
Its alot better man. I really dont know the specs on the 2nd gen bp, but the 1st gen bp out performs the 2nd gen by FARRR. The 1st gen bp is basically built for turbo. Forged cranks, oil squirters, good flowing head, it is beefy and built. I'm turboing mine soon and i have no problem running high boost on it because of the way the motor is engineered. Hell, my friend runs 15 pounds of boost daily driving on his bp, and thats being generous. Try that on a second gen and see if your piston doesnt fly through your block. The 2nd gen bp swap is not common either, never heard of it done, its not really a performance or even a motor with potential. Maybe you got the wrong motor or something?? But yea man, thats my 2 cents. If your talkin about a miata bp then good luck tricking the computer into finding that internal coil. Peace
Let me know what you guys think.. later

I have a 97 model BP in mine, well atleast the long block is, and i love it, i just hope i don't run into any problems further down the road when i turbo it, like you guys are saying.

nah man, i'm not saying the motor is awful or anything, i'm just saying the 1st gen bp is better for obvious reasons. If you look at the toda racing bp motor, it is sex and is a 2nd gen, but i doubt anyone could afford that. The 1st gen bp swap just has alot of aftermarket support, and is just better all around. The 2nd gen protege guys swap out their 2nd gen bp's to swap in the 1st gen bp and bpt's if that tells you anything. But do away with what you got, i can kinda see why there is alot of confusion between the 1st gen and 2nd gen motors. Good luck and how the hell can i post pictures on here without having a website to host them on? i've had pics of my car forever and cant post em.haha, Peace

i reoved the head on my moms 92 escort gt (belt valves) and I was impressed...the engines pistons and cylinder well where so clean and nice. Even the zig sag lines are there. This engine is so so very dependable. Also opened up the bottom to check everything...its all clean, no signs of wear... nice. The head gasket was in good condition, still replaced. Now this second gen bp? is this the one you see on the new proteges? I saw my friends and he has one and the difference is that one has a coil pack instead of disty it looks the same as the bp, except with no disty.

I have read (meaning this is not firsthand knowledge and can be total BS) that the 2nd gen BP's have been known to be not as strong with turbo applications at higher than 10psi. But Ya the 1st gens are pretty much a turbo engine and have a head that most BPT owners swap to. In another thread i posted about how 1st gen BP's have been known to handle up to 2 bars of boost. But...BUT there are two types of 1st gen BP's also. A short nose and long nose crank. I don't know which one was better or if it made a difference.

Go to http://www.clubprotege.com/forum/showth ... =motoriety For more info on the BP engines thanks to the members at clubprotege.com.

2nd gen is beefy, but i've read it has a cast crank and only teh 1st gen bp's had the forged crank.

also the 2nd gen's don't have oil squirters which is a really good thing to have for turbo
