Projectors are NOT HID?

This forum is for discussion of topics relating to MX-3 lighting such as Headlights, Tail lights, Accessory Lights, Interior Lights, Etc. For example, Rear Euro Altezza Style Tail lights, Headlight units, LED's, HID's, Bulbs, Interior lights, Neons, Strobes, Auxillary Lights/Fogs or anything filament and gas discharge related.
Also anything dealing with the elctrical system.

Projectors are NOT HID?

Post by hgallegos915 »

hmm i got some projectors to cut today and...it says on the side ( not for use with hid bulb) which makes sense since it uses the stock wiring harnes and they are exactly the same as my projectors.... I saw some "hid" projectors on ebay for way over 120.

What kind of projectors were they? Most OEM Halogen projectors that I have seen do not have that writing on them.

You should see some projectors for sale that are way over $200.... the ones from Q45 can reach up to $450.

well they are the black projectors that are on sale on ebay, the ones everyone buys. Look for a white sticker in some weird language..you cxan still make it out..i think its deutch? not sure it states this "warning HID balb not allowed" "lighting ring volatege 12.5" then theres chinesse or japanese lighting. I dont remember my projectors saying that also I did not that its an H1 bulb..not h3 on the high beams. These are the black ones that have the igh beam in the inside, projector middle and turn signal on the outer part (all inside the case of course) so..um they are not hid??? all the ones on ebay are the ones everyone uses for mx3 projectors, so now im thinking we dont really have hid? what kind of bulb is inside the projector? if we use hid then i imagine it would melt the plastic?

HID will not melt the plastic because it draws 35w. But will produce crappy beam in those housings. You bulb used in a low beam is most likely H3 Halogen.

HID runs give off almost no heat compared to Haligen!! its funny how manny ppl thing they will melt your plastic housing when really the haligen bulbs are more likey to do it then HIDHID give off almost no heat compared to Halogen!! Its funny how many people think they will melt your plastic housing when really the halogen bulbs are more likely to do it then HID

(Halogen = 55w)
(HID = 35w and 10times the light and almost no heat)

Well, almost.

Halogen 700-2100lm
HID 2800-3200lm

So about 2 to 3 times brighter and in a case of H9 halogen, they get pretty close.

I'm one of the people that originally thought that hid would give off more heat. How is this not possible? I mean, thinner filiments create brighter lights right? So how does this work? is it just an illusion caused by the beam being magnified and condensed into a smaller spectrum? I am totally lost. I know that an LED sheds a more direct beam than a bulb, and stays cooler, but a bulb creates a more diverse beam and gets warmer. I don't know the specs of my lighting most of the time, so it is a trial and error thing for me when I change my lights. Ps, some cool pics coming of my custom parking lights and signals.

Will, HID does not have any filaments. It's an arc that jumps between electrodes in a gas environment. It's hot don't be mistaken, just not as hot as halogen bulb. Simple reason, the power draw required is less than that of a conventional halogen bulb. There are HID bulbs that run on 50w etc and they will run hotter. HID bulb does not have the resistance of a tungsten filament either, it's an electrochemical reaction that is fairly complex with gas, electric charges, chemical salts and pressure. I had a really good article somewhere that explained the whole process. Can't find it right now.
