1.8 DOHC from an escort, or BP from a 91-94 Protege???
1.8 DOHC from an escort, or BP from a 91-94 Protege???
Both of these engines are listed on ebay, and i think that Both of them will fit in my car, ive got a 92' RS... anyway, wich is better in the long run? im still trying to find out from the guy with the Protege motor what year it came out of, someone told me if its a 94' the ECU is different?

Both are the same engine... except one will say Ford on the valve cover, and the other will say Mazda. I've heard that the Mazda is the better of the two because its assembled in Japan whereas the Ford engine is assembled in the US, and that the Ford engine uses castings which are manufactured by a different company and are a worse quality.
The Escort GT oil journals are smaller as well.phredren wrote:Both are the same engine... except one will say Ford on the valve cover, and the other will say Mazda. As quoted go with the mazda motor for many a reason

Um I havn't heard that one before. But there is a differeance in the fuel rail. That and the ford has a couple of other things. If you look in the past month there was a BP Gotcha's for the Escort swap. The protege one is easier in the long run.phredren wrote:Both are the same engine... except one will say Ford on the valve cover, and the other will say Mazda. one difference that i have noticed in the two motors is that the EGT motor i had the head is a BP05, and the ProLX motor the head only had BP stamped on it, don't know if that makes a difference, but i thought i remember reading the BP05 is better, not sure though.

'91 was the only year the egt had smaller journals if my memory serves me correctly.
Fast imports only come on two wheels.

my egt head has bp stamped on it.
I know guys who have had 400,000kms on their egt... I don't think the egt motor will self destruct because it says Ford on the valve cover. The differences mentioned are fairly inconsequential for most guys putting in BPs.
That and I picked up an entire escort GT for $500CDN...

they are all the same. I never knew about smaller oil journals but if it smaller in the 91 escorts, then it is smaller in the 90-91 protege's (escort was still the older model in 90'). I know they revised a few things in the 92 proteges. They updated the crankshaft to make it forged instead of cast.
I've read that the escort engine doesn't have a baffled oil pan, while the protege does. And I know the 94 protege BP's had higher compression (9.0:1 instead of 8.8:1) and a tubular style exhaust manifold instead of the cast peice of crap the other ones had.
For some reason the escort/tracer 1.8 is rated at 127hp while the protege is rated at 125. And from my experience...driving escort GT's and a tracer LTS, the engine felt considerably more responsive & peppy than the half-dozen proteges i've driven.
Only thing about the scort motor is the sensors may be slightly different. You might have to source some protege BP sensors and screw them into the engine to make sure your harness matches up with them. Or you can just get an escort harness

Cant you get a J-spec engine and it has pretty much stronger made everything? not the american crap. If those engines are all the same why is the swap from the escort harder then the swap from teh protege?

the baffled oil pan keeps the oil in the bottom of the pan near the pick up and keeps it from sloshing around due to hard turns or acceleration. its similar to the ones on the B6T. one thing also is that I believe the Pro LX's have the support plate for the main caps while the EGT's don't. This means the LX should be able to rev-higher more safely, but in order to do so the valvetrain needs to be swapped out regardless of what car it came from.
I'm running a 94/95 EGT motor BTW...
and where is it said that the escort motor is a harder swap? ive seen both motors side by side and the are the same except for the fuel rail, valve cover and possibly the harness. but i modified the SOHC injector harness and its working flawlessly so far so no big worries.

Ok I get the baffled oil pan shady. But why does the protege LX one have a hole in the side of the oil pan, and the EGT doesn't? Check out the picture of the LX on the left and the EGT on the right. The hole is not cut out, it looks like it is suppose to be there? any ideas?
I ended up using the LX engine and the EGT oil pan for my swap.....
