How do I Check the "Check Engine" Code

how do I go about checking the computer code? I remember doing it on my old Pontiac Fiero, you basically just had to use a paper clip to short-wire two connectors and get the code by the blinking "check engine" light... short out TEN and GND with key off then swich on but dont start
