support canadian companies
I just want to let you guys know that we must support our canadian companies rather then selling out for the american ones. Our dollar is garbage and it is partially because canadians are choosing to shop at the american stores & restaurants. just to inform u all that all that money we are spending on the U.S. companies is not being respent over here but in the U.S.A. So basically there is no long term benefit in buying in such stores as all that money is making the states that much richer.
u might want to argue that they create jobs but if we make more demand on the canadian companies then there will be more jobs and our money will stay where it belongs and not leave canada.
I know that everyone thinks that we are not enough to change this problem but if you love Canada like I do and want to see the canadian dollar grow strong like it was in the 70's then eat at harveys and not at mcdonalds and shop at rona not home depot ect.
word of mouth is very powerful so help your fellow canadians.
peace.

You need to take some Commerce/International Business/Economics classes. Lots of misinformation here.

Re: support canadian companies
buddy I know that what killed our dollar was that frigon free trade agreement and not to put u down but I am from the big city and I work on bay st. I am not saying that if we buy goods from canadian companies only that our dollar will be the same as theirs but we don't help our companies as we should. This accounts for a lot of brain drain and we loose a lot of smart canadians because there is no confidence within our dollar. If you have any good points then lets here em.

Re: support canadian companies
I get it, Saskatoon makes me a Prairie boy hick, therefore I don't know as much as you big boys working on Bay St in Toronto. Ok then. Well, I don't know what you do for a living, is there a McDonalds on Bay st?? I have been studying International business for 4 years now.
I agree that NAFTA has done nothing great for our economy. It is often said that NAFTA is only free if it benefits the USA. Fine, soft wood lumber wars, etc are a result of NAFTA.
Did you know that if a company has a head office in Canada the money made in Canada is taxable under federal law? Which ever province that HQ is located in benefits by being able to collect provincial tax dollars on the earnings as well. Win-win situation for both province and Canada as a whole. New jobs create new money which in turn creates new spending. New spending builds the economy. Without Foreign direct investment, many countries would be nowhere. China is quickly becoming one of the leading countries right now mainly due to FDI. Microsoft is able to employ cheap labour for processors at $2/hr in China while back in the USA it would cost $15+/hr. Good business sense. Did you also know that when you call Microsoft support you aren't getting an American?? You have actually called India and are speaking with an Indian speaking with a faked american accent. Cheaper labour.
Brain drain has nothing to do with NAFTA or not supporting Canadian grown companies. Money is power and graduates go where they can be offered the most money. I can make a specified amount in telecommunications industry within my province right now. But if I go to Alberta, I will make about $20k more per year, although cost of living increases. People go where the jobs are, where the money is, and where they want to be. If they didn't want to leave, they would not. About 60% of my college will go to Alberta for jobs, 90% of accounting majors go to Alberta. It is a fact of life.
The Canadian gov't needs to take a stand on what it wants from NAFTA instead of being bullied around by Bush. The USA is in just as bad a place right now as we are, gov't is always responsible. Did you know a Honda Accord only costs $15000 in Canada?? Due to the USA putting trade restrictions on foreign vehicles about 20 years ago, Japanese car manufactures were limited to importing a limited amount of vehicles per year. Due to this, each Japanese manufacturer doubled their prices in order to make the same amount of money but on fewer cars...still works.
Argue all you want, NAFTA isn't the only thing to blame.

oh ya, this era of telecommunications will make it possible for us to work from home or anywhere in the world. A lot of what u said is true but it doesn't explain how indigo bookstores forcing chapters to go belly up or how sears took over eatons is a good thing for our economy.
