Nasty Engine Problems

Post by wyldside »

Hey Everyone, I need your help!

Recently me engine has suddenly just started cutting out for no reason that I can see. Even at highway speeds. I can start it up, drive it for a minute and then suddenly RRRr........ It just dies. If I let it sit for a minute or so, I can usually start it back up again, but it dies soon again after. At first I thought it was my PCV valve because it had a crack in it but I replaced that and the same problem still exists. Most people would suggest the Distributer but I replaced that 5 months ago. And besides, usually the car stumbles and hessitates a bit when that starts to fail. I ran a diagnostics and the car coughed up the following error codes.

02 'NE2' crankshaft position sensor

03 'G' camshaft position sensor

16 Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system

17 LHO2S inversion error

24 RHO2S inversion error

I can't say that I've ever seen this combination of errors before. Does anyone know what this means.

Oh, and by the way... it's a 1993 GS.

Now the last I tried was resetting the computer by disconnecting the battery for 1 min. After that I reconnected it and restarted the car. It ran again just fine for about a minute and then just cut out. I re-checked the Diagnostics for any error codes but there were none. Usually I'm pretty good with these engines but this has got me confused. :confused2:

Somehow I don't think that will fix anything.... And I don't exactly have a spare available.

What does the sticker say on the replacement distributor?

Also, by saying, the car ran and then just died. Do you mean you drove the car and it died? What RPM? Consistent? Or, it just started, idled for a minute and then just died? After it dies, do your dash lights stay on?

Hi Taras,

I'll have to check the sticker later but...

When the car runs, it sounds perfectly fine. You wouldn't know that anything is wrong. It doesn't matter if I drive it or let it sit and idle. Usually after a Minute or two it stops. The idle RPM is consistant and it cuts out no matter what the RPM is at. Yes my dash lights do stay on. It reacts as if it has stalled only you can't restart it right away. This is a really weird problem. I'm so frustrated with how much money I've thrown into this car in the last 6 months.

have you tryed changing your fuel filter. i know it sounds kinda far fetched but it could cause the same problem if its cloged up, and theirs a peice of dirt floating around. went threw the same thing with my car. i dont see it being your dist. at all. but definatly look at the fuel filter. cause when their cloged their cloged and nothings getting threw.

I'll try to change that this weekend. At least that isn't too expensive. I think I last changed that about 1 year ago.

I have under ground heated parking and I always make sure I have more than half a tank of fuel before I park. That way the chances of that happening are lower. I'll pick some up and give it a try anyways.

I couldn't find any stickers on the distributor. I think that's because it's re-manufactured.

also might be the fuel pump. Goes on same lines that was mentioned of filter. But thats one of those situations that could take thousands of $$ to fix and it ends up being something stupid thats a 2$ part.

At least thats if it was my luck

Borrow a good disty from someone and then you will know for sure. It only takes 15 mins to swap one.

Great... It kinda sucks that not many of the members here have V6s. I don't know where I'm going to get a distributor to borrow. I looked around and the cheapest price I could find on a fuel pump was $370 with the strainer? If this is going to be too much $$$ I'm going to have to let the car sit for a few months so that I can get a KLZE. Might as well kill 10 birds with 1 stone. This car is nickle and diming me to death. I almost feel like pushing it off a cliff.

A little good news... The fuel pump is the exact same for the 323 models and from a wrecker you can purchase them for around $25 us, but if you ask for one for a MX-3 is closer to $80us.

Before I get flamed once more on fuel pumps I know the 323 and mx-3 pumps have different stock #'s but I HAVE A 323's FUEL PUMP ON MY CAR, and it works fine with the same PSI Mazda says the mx-3 needs.
