What can you tell me about this engine?? *PIC*

Post by SilverBulletMR2 »

looked at the mx-3 ive been calling on today. The guy thinks its a "turbo" but i know better since i traced the exhaust pipes and no turbo was found. He then pointed to the intake manifold "where it says 'injection' " and said that the previous owner put that in there to give it more power. I noticed the car still has the stock airbox. Now my question to you guys is is this a stock intake manifold or an improvement? Anything else you can tell from the PIC? I assume its a 4cyl from the acceleration or lack thereof i got while driving it.
THanks again!

I think you are better with this one in a 4cyl tech forum. Looks like a 92-93 SOHC 1.6 stocker.

I agree. it looks like my stock 88 hp 1.6 sohc. The only possible thing I could think of is an intake add on called the tornado or something like that. It might be installed in the intake somewhere(like a $50 part). Definatly not a turbo, you can tell because the turbo would have coolant and oil lines going to it. I can say that my 1.6 does have some balls though. Definatly more than a cavalier 2.2l and I've beaten a dodge dakota v-6 before. But anyways, if the guy is using a turbo you can't see, he could be redirecting you from seeing something that could cause you problems in the long run.LOOK CLOSELY BEFORE BUYING. other than that, good luck

yeah i dont think he was directing me from anything else, i think he just misunderstood the previous owner. It has steelies on it and a stock intake box, so i immediatly was like wow no turbo, but he is a foreign exchange student from germany and i think he may have misunderstood the owner when he bought it. He thinks, i believe, that because it says injection that it is aftermarket. No complaints haha. Now just gotta sell my current car, so i have the money to pick this up before he sells it to someone else... BTW its a 1986 Toyota MR2 (my second one) with a JDM engine with 25k miles on it. Asking $1200 in the orange county area........ :2thumbsup:

silverbuttel says>>>>? I assume its a 4cyl from the acceleration or lack thereof i got while driving it.

i say>>> houston, we got problems. if u do not know its a 4bangger, then forget about turbo.

i can see by the pic only 4 spark plugs and 4 sp wires. so it is a 4 cyl. if u can not tell by that, then what can u tell about turbo.

also if its an older one,ie 88 hp, why buy it?
the newer ones have more hp than that. ie 94, 95
check the mx-3 site for more info.

because its in my price range and in very good condition.... hence why i went and test drove it. I think i am going to buy it. Yeah its a step down in accel from my MR2, but i need something newer and more reliable with AC that works for a change... So i guess the intake manifold here is the stock one? Not off of another car? That was my main question...

EDIT: thanks i was typing this reply while you posted above the answer

and thanks for all the warm cozy helpful hints
:confused2:

That car has mazdas most reliable engine. My first mx-3 had this engine and with a performance exhaust it was fun to drive. Went up to 300,000km with no probs till it got totalled. Buy it if its in good shape.

lol ya its definatly not a turbo engine, it looks all stock to me, i could be wrong about that im 100% its not turbo, hense the factory heat shield is still on the stock exhaust manifold. Ive never seen a turbo engine with a heatshield.
