dust boot with coilovers?

Post by 2.5mx3 »

Hey guys-
I *finally* got my MS struts, and I'm all set to do my coilover setup. The instructions with the coilovers do not mention using the dust boot and really I don't think you're supposed to... however I'm worried that the strut piston will be affected by being exposed.
Does anyone with the GC coilovers have any problems with this, or think it will be a problem down the road?
Thanks for any input.

Okay, my mistake! The instructions DO mention the dust boot, but only on the front installation instructions (front and rear comes on separate pages).
Now, the instructions are not very specific, and pretty ambiguous about what to do with the dust boot. It says "cut stock bumpstop/dustboot", but there doesn't appear to be any part of the dust boot on the coilover assembly diagram.
It still seems to me that the piston will be exposed to the elements, gather dirt and debris and therefore may be affected if there is nothing protecting it. Ideas?
Thanks for reading!
[ November 02, 2002: Message edited by: 2.5mx3 ]

I had a dustboot with my stock struts. When I bought tokico's I never replaced them. I currently have Tokico/Ground-Control setup with no dustboots on any struts. Haven't had any trouble for almost 2 years now...
Anto
P.S. - Exactly how long did it take to get those struts? I found another place that can get them but they are about $50 more than CS, but if I'm going to wait 3 months I think I'll pay the extra...

My Tokicos never seemed to last that long (at least, the front ones didn't). Okay, cool. Looks like you're not supposed to use the boots.
As for my MS struts, they took about 6 weeks to get from Japan to Corksport to me. Seemed like an eternity, and now I have to do this job in 30(F) degree weather. lol
Anyway, what company quoted you the other price? I got a quote from another place too (can't remember the name right now), and I think it was about $50 more than CS.
Corksport actually seems pretty reasonable when it comes to Mazdaspeed stuff. Every other place I check seems to charge a mint for shipping from Japan.
[ November 02, 2002: Message edited by: 2.5mx3 ]
