few wiring questions

Post by ryanlindenberg »

ok my bpt swap is almost done... i'm running the haltech and have removed the original ecu but the wiring is still there....

1)will the fuel pump still work or does the factory ecu control the pump? if the ecu does control it, which wires can i splice the 2 orange haltech wires into to get the pump to work (on the factory harness).

2) which wire do you splice the grey haltech wire into to get power when the ignition is turned on?

3)what did you guys get for your ignitor? did you get the protege ignitor & coil or a MSD ignition set-up and how much did they cost? some guys on the ERDT board said that it was hard to wire the haltech to the factory ignitor...

thanks for the help

The two people you need to ask on this board are

1. jaydog5678 Justin
2. OsoSloZ28 Ashley (male)

Both have done this swap with the Haltech and both are very knowledgeable about the various wiring & setup for the Haltech.

1) Well, I don't feel like digging into the back seat this late at night, but...
The factory ecu will not control it if you've taken it out, right!? Don't worry, you won't need the factory ecu. I don't have any notes on which wire goes where, but the easiest thing to do would be to find which wires go to the +, and - on the pump. You should be using a different pump anyway, so look at the harness and follow the wires going to the pump. IIRC, I ran my own wires up to the harness going into the pump.

2)This would be going into the largest blue wire under the dash, right next to the old ecu location. There is a harness directly below the old mounting point for the ecu. In this harness is a large blue wire, with 2 smaller wires (yellow and purplish in color). tap into big blue.

3) Get the MSD and external coil. Sorry, I don't remember the cost. You could wire into the factory Protege coil, but why? That coil won't due for F/I. If you decide to get the MSD, I'll tell you how to wire it in. It's simple.

The only one worth getting is the plain 6AL. You don't need built in rev limiters or any other add-ons. Just keep it simple. You'll also need an external coil. My coil is a Blaster SS.

The price sounds about right. If you have any more questions, just post'em up.

just bought the MSD 6A...i looked into the 6AL but it was 50 bucks more and all it had extra was a rev limiter i think...and i can do that with the haltech so i stuck with the 6A... i also bought a jeg's brand 45000 volt coil....are you using one of those ballast resistors??? i didn't get one because it just said it was recommended...got any tips on wiring this thing...it'll be a few days before i get it so i can't check it out myself yet :(

i just looked at my fuel pump today, there are 5 wires comming out of the pump:
black
black
yellow (grounded)
red
blue
so i'm thinking red or blue, one must be for the pump and the other the fuel level sending unit.

I have'nt seen the Jegs stuff yet. It should'nt be any different than any other MSD coil. You don't need a ballast resistor, or at least I'm not using one. What was it reccomended for?

I'll look at the fuel pump asap...

thanks for the help, the jeg's website said the ballast resistor would make the coil last longer because the voltage wouldn't be fluctuating as much or something like that...i'm not really too worried about it since the resistor was $15 and that's how much my coil was, i'll just buy a new coil if it goes :)

have you tried the new halwin software from haltech yet? i'm getting them to email it to me, it's supposed to work for XP which i'm stoked about since that is what my laptop has...i was worried that i would have to use someone else's POS laptop with my haltech but then i saw halwin on their website...it looks pretty kick "butt", it's got 3d graphs and everything.

... No ECU yet, but I spent the money on a cheap nitrous kit that I had access to. Ryan, I work at Advance Auto Parts, that new store where Players used to be, we open this thursday. Come in if you need parts, I should be able to hook you up quite nicely! :2thumbsup:

took my car out for a drive today, it's pretty fast, i still have a couple wiring questions left though :)

where is the cooling fan relay located?

what wires do i need to connect to get my factory tach to work again?

and what wires do i need to connect to get my factory temp guage to work?

i'm also having problems with the idle...it runs fine when i give it gas but it can't idle at all...it's trying to idle @ 560ish RPM and it dies a lot... thanks for the help again. :) i'm soooo close to being done now
