Limiter???

Post by Franko »

So apparentily the mx-3 does have a rev limiter. I never could find out before if it did or not.
Dont ask me how it happened or what I was doing, but lets just say that last night I was driving the car a little spiritly and when it gets up into the high rpm's it has almost a snowball effect and just goes right up, right up and apparently right to the limiter. I never knew the mx-3 had a limiter before.. it wouldent work with the other engine. I could see with the safc that it limited at 6270 rpm. Thats not too bad considering the redline is 6500, But I am wondering something now. Dosent the limiter shut the fuel supply off? and dosent that mean a lean condition then? I suppose it is not as bad hitting the limiter with a turbo as it is with a 100 shot of nos on the car or something like that. I hope that it didnt hurt anything.

hmmm...6270 seems a little low? mine cuts in at 6350 as does JWmotorsports car. However i have had it rev as high as 6400 before(don't know how). i don't intentionally go for the limiter but i'm sure you know how it is: nail it from a roll in first, turbo spools, tires break loose and almost instantly your in the red.
PS. i have also wondered as to whether its a fuel cut or just a spark cut. can any one else answer this?

I don't know the actualy operating point of the limiter, but your discrepencies in the rpm are probibly just from the tach not being 100% accurate.

It is almost like there is nothing you can do about hitting the limiter when you give it to the car. You are so right about what happens shady. The human brain cant possably be fast enough to see that you are approaching redline and make you take your foot off the gas.. it happens so fast. It has been raining since yesterday here and I have wheel spin up into fourth gear.. Its just crazy

that sucks. the K8 ECU will let you run to around 7800-8000.

the ECU cuts the fuel. If it cut the spark then it would be dumping unburnt fuel right out the exhaust and into the air :( not very good for your cat or the EPA.

But cutting the fuel means your running lean, BAD when running a turbo, and VERY BAD when running nitrous.

you could get a MSD rev limiter and set it to kick in just befro your stock limiter, this way it will cut the ignition befor your ECU can cut the fuel.

Apparently the limiter cuts the spark and fuel at the same time.. It would be rediculous for a company to make such a brillant machine only for it to blow up because of a dumb way to program the computer..

I found out the computer cuts both to limit the rpm's.. :)
