rx7 hatch?

hmmm i was just wondering if it would be possible to put a rx7 hatch to the mx3.

its been done before. i have the pic on my harddrive somewhere. it looks like the front half of the hatch will fit perfectly, but you're going to have to modify the rx-7 hatch by removing some space, about 2-3 inches, then mold it to the rear of the mx-3's stock hatch, for it to work. i was thinking of doing the same thing, but after looking at the mx-3 and the rx-7 VERY closely, i just figured it wasn't worth the effort.

Everyone can find the pic-- It was Marcos Acostas Rear-drive, Rotary powered Tube-framed, MX-3 shell that he used to race.

It was an MX-3 body only with an RX-7 hatch.

Me and the guys here in Atlanta have been thinking of this for quite some time now (Years) and have determined that it woud be relatively easy with a good body-shop. The width of the hatch as well as the slope of the sides are almost identical.

You would need to sacrifice a stock hatch as well as an RX-7 hatch to do it-- but I think it would look awesome.

I think the main question should be if there is any significant weight to be saved in doing it. The stock MX3 hatches are pretty heavy.

Doubtful... by the time everything is welded back in place and the necessary support structures are made-- it will weigh nearly the same.

Just a guess though.

the rx7 hatch feels like it weighs the same as the mx-3 hatch. after comparing both hatches from my dad's, the lines are pretty much the same except for the rear half where in the rx7, the window stops and it gets all flat. thats where the modifying will be needed.
