Car assembled, here are some pics

I got the car together today. Looks pretty good, but a few flaws here and there. Overall I'm not surprised or disappointed with how I did painting the car.

Here are some pics:

. I will respray it, you can see red bleeding through the one picture, i simply ran out of paint
-Hood: Pretty ****ty, you can see red showing through more towards the windsheild. I'm going to respray it
-Spoiler: worst...half is covered good, the other half is showing red a LOT. respray
-Both power mirrors: passenger is good, the drivers sucks..i touched it while it was drying and a lump of paint came off, so there is an area of red showing on the mirror. Gonna respray
-Mudguards: came out good, but lots of runs near the bottom of them, I don't care enough to respray, only can see if you lay on your back and look at it.

When I get more time I'm going to redo the rear bumper, hood, spoiler and power mirrors. Until then, the car looks ok, only weird in some angles of light.

Its coming out pretty good. Just keep respraying, its a work in progress. Thats the color I wanted my MX-3 too but I decided to keep it black.

Nice choice in colors. Try to do something about the red behind the front bumper too. Butnow you see why good body men get paid the good money but you didnt do bad for your first shot.

yea thats pretty good for a first shot ill agree. i also agree with mx3tt try taking off the bumper and painting the chassis behind black, and while you're at it you can do the same to the fender wells and clean them up so the car looks SUPER clean.

-the little strip of red above the rear keyhole, did you remove the strip between the body and the hatch glass in that area? it can be easily removed and put back for a complete cover.

Thanks guys. I might actually do that. I could just get some black spraypaint and spraybomb behind the headlights. I'm going to shove some foglights there eventually which is why I didn't put the mesh back.

I"m hoping how I have the license plate will be legal in my state. THe law says you ahve to be able to see the numbers and the state for it to be legal. Both of those are visible, but you have to be like 1 foot off the ground looking straight on to see it.


mitmarks: its two coats of that titanium color, and two coats of cleacoat. The rear bumper and hood got only one coat tho + a super light misting, hence the crappiness of the red shining through. I used 3 qts of basecoat too (4.5qts when mixed with reducer), I dunno...took me awhile to get used to it. I wasted plenty of paint, oh wellz. Itll only cost like $60 to get another qt of base and another qt of clear and redo those parts. I have all the materials to re-spray them so thats good.

nice work man....not bad for a beginner, my only suggestion is that you should have used a light to medium shade grey sealer before you applied the basecoat ..it would help with the paint coverage and some of the splotchy areas. how many clear coats did you apply ??

hey good job bro.....man I just wish you live not that far from me so i could help you take everything apart before spraying. I know it's hard to work on those stuffs by your self. I myself is doing my car stuffs and want to do bodyworks/paint thing is i live in apartment building. anyways you did a nice job on first time. More power co-Pinoy.


i hope someone here in Ottawa wants to do paintjob on their garage....i'll help and paint my car too after. anyone know if I can rent some space like that?

You should've definitely sanded the whole car down and then primed it nicely with a light shade of grey, cuz light colors like red or blue are hard choices for color change.
I have no idea how you have done the painting, but seems like someone was holding a gun to your neck when you painted. I suggest you take everything off the car, bumpers, mirrors, door sills, sunroof, door and paint all those stuff separately and definitely paint behind the bumper. Also, as i said you should've sanded/ grey primered the car before paint man.
Meh, it was your first time, good job, I did it twice and thats painting for me for the rest of my life.

Car looks REALLLLLLY good for you first time, with your only knowledge coming from books. You did it pretty blindly, and it came out very good for your first time. Now you know where stuff goes wrong, and your second time will be very good!

Uhh..I did remove almost everything. Fenders, hood, front bumper, and all the peices off the door and hatch came off. Only thing left on while painting was the rear bumper, and doors. All the other stuff was removed.

I had to spray the whole car fast b/c the paint dries in 20 minutes, so ya you could say a gun was held to my head.

I sanded the car good as **** before spraying, but I should've bought some gray basecoat and sprayed that on beforehand

thats where your mistake was, you do not remove fender hood etc, usually only plastic bumper covers cause plastic requires flex agent added to paint. for $300 id prob have someone spray that car better, sorry if it disappoints you.

What is the mistake? I already know what my mistake was, bad lighting! The paint i used had flex agent added to it from the get-go, and removing the stuff shouldn't make a difference

You are basically saying that the paint job couldn't turn out good b/c I removed the fenders and hood. The fenders turned out excellent. The only real reason the hood and rear bumper got lack of coverage is simply b/c I had bad lighting where I was spraying them. the top part of the hood (near the nose) got good coverage, as you go down (more towards the winsheild) the hood starts showing red through it. Same goes for the rear bumper. The top 1/2 of the bumper is fine, just the bottom half is where you can see slight red coming through. I didn't have enough paint to correct it by the time I noticed it, and quite frankly, I didn't care b/c I knew that redoing those parts wouldn't be a biggie.

I'd love for you to find a place local to the DC area that would spray my car for $300 maybe in california, but not on the east coast.

well yes, you do not remove parts from car when painting, as i can see from your pictures looks like fender is darker than door, cause you got more coverage on fender than door, if you had everything on car, everything gets sprayed in same pattern, you cant see difference in pattern or shading. understand? so I didnt see how many coats did you put on?
