Seat Covers
Seat Covers
Well, I think I'm going to make my own seat covers. I feel pretty confident that I'll be able to do it.
I'm planning to remove the stock seat covers, separate them at the seams, trace the patters onto new fabric, and make them that way.
I think our stock seats are rather comfortable, and mine are in good conditions. And I can spend a lot less doing it this way, than replacing the seats with racing seats that i probable wont even be able to get in the color of my interior (going with a gray/silver/black theme).
My question to you all is this: What material should I use? I dont like vinyl or leather seats... they're cold on the winter, hot and sticky in the summer, and you slide all around in them when taking corners. What other fabric is there? Should I use neoprene? I'm not sure I've ever felt it... is it comfortable? Any other suggestions?
-Abs

Re: Seat Covers
Wet suits are made of noeprene. Want "the boys" to sweat all day use it, consult a fabric shop or upholsterer for a very very long wearing material. Just don't go for a floral print.

Re: Seat Covers
just go to your local fabric store and see if you like something, or just take a sample of your stock fabric and ask if they have something similar but in the colours you want.
If you want super grip in the corners, put swade on the inner part of the side bolsters so that it grips you when you sit in it.

Re: Seat Covers
Neoprene is pretty dope. Before you spend all the time making the seat covers you might want to check Ebay, they have some Neoprene seat covers for like 60 bucks, I just got them. But you are right you won't be able to have silver.

Re: Seat Covers
i attempted the same thing with the rear seats with the method you mentioned. it looks alright, starting to wear out, and wasn't worth the time/money IMO.. but then again, i didn't do it right the first time. i sowed everything by hand and it lasted pretty long.
now im going to use autoleathers.com for my upholstery when i get the money.
watch out for vinyl, its hard to work with depending on the thickness, but its a good material. neoprene should be easy to work with, but make sure it looks good from the outside before sealing up the seam. sometimes neoprene stretches when you sow it.

Re: Seat Covers
yeah, im not quite sure what i'm going to do yet. i may do neoprene... definetly not vinyl.
and i would be using a machine to do the sewing, with some heavy duty thread...
i'll buy enough material to do one seat cover... i can't imagine it will be that expensive. it will take time, but then i'll see how it comes out.
if i do it myself, i can do tribal designs or something cool with the fabric, to have truly unique seats.
-Abs
