Is this a Good Deal?

Post by KimmiKim »

Hi, this is my first time posting here. I'm not sure if this topic is where I should ask this, but here goes. Right now I am borrowing my father's MX-3. He wants to sell it to me for $3,000, which is what he payed for it 4 years ago. Here's the details: Raspberry metallic, leather, v6, GS, new struts and rotors, fairly new tires, paint is chipping on the hood, door locks are broken, if you open the passenger window the passenger door opens (dangerous!), 97,000mi, it runs well, no accidents or major problems so far. It's a nice car, all my friends think its hot, but I don't know if thats a fair deal. When he bought the car it didn't have any damage to it, but then again, KBB prices it at $3,350. You guys would know better than I do. Thanks!

I would say its a pretty good deal. After all it is a Special Edition. And if you still think its to much, hes your dad, talk him down.

He wanted more for it but I got him down to $3,000, he originally asked for $3,700 because he put in new struts and some other stuff (basic maintanence, he doesn't get that it doesn't increase the value if the parts it had were old). At first I didn't think I'd get the car, but yesterday I found out that it's a special edition from this site. It's such a rare car, I had no idea. Maybe you guys don't think so, but I think that the color of the paint is perfect for a girl (like me). Am I the only girl here?

That is terrible, that your dad wants to sell it for the same price he paid for it 4 YEARS AGO!.
and that its your own dad makes it worse!.
maybe he got a really great deal on it 4 years ago but thats no reason to jack up his own daughter.
under his logic he could buy a 1983 k-car for $100.00 put 4 struts on it for $400.00 new tires to replace the bald ones for $300.00 then drive it for 3 years and demand $700.00 for a used k-car?
I would give him 4 grand but ONLY if it was in the same condition as when he baught it, tell him to fix ALL the problems so that it is safe and in perfect condition the offer him 3700 for it.

but it is his car, if he isnt rich and he is selling it for the money to buy another car, and he is putting it in the auto trader for 4 grand then its up to you to come up with the cash.
I would see how many offers he gets, maybe he wont get any offers over 2-3 grand then you can get it for a good price. :D

I'll buy your car! Well, let me know what problems it has, it's probably in good condition. How many miles? Is it the SE? v6? I'm really excited, I'd definatly be interested in driving to NY to check it out. I've got the cash right now, I was actually saving to get my dad's car.
Yeah my dad doesn't have any problems, he has his own condo in Glastonbury (condos there are 180,000), he's a research engineer at Pratt, and he has mad money saved. He's just a cheap guy, I think he'd rather have me borrow it so he can control it (like take it away if I'm rude to him). I'm not going to waste money fixing a car that isn't even mine, I've been looking around and I found nice stuff that would look hot on it, and reading about it on this site.
I have another question. If I had a SE is it bad to do modifications? I mean, if theres only 2000 made, should I really put on a body kit or change the appearance? It's so rare that I almost feel guilty. Thanks guys!

why would you feel guilty? you can always keep the stock parts and put them on later when you sell the car or something. I have a black SE and I have tons of plans for it.

Hi Kim, welcome to the MX-3 community!
I would definitely take XxLuieLinesxX up on his offer. The Special Editions are so hard to find in decent shape, and that's a great price.
As for modifying your SE, there's a whole lot you can do without really altering the basic look of the car. Are you interested in performance parts, or just cosmetic upgrades? If you want a little of both, go for an uprated suspension (struts and springs) that will improve handling and lower the car. A new set of wheels will make a huge difference in improving the overall look of the car too, if you want to spend the money.
Of course there are too many things to list that you can do to the car, but it sounds like you have some ideas already. :) This is definitely the place to ask questions for the MX-3, so please feel free to ask anything! Also, the search and FAQ features are useful if you have a basic question.
Again, welcome to the board!

Hey Kim, yeah they're other girlz on the board too (like me), and I'm with Curtklze when he said he'd pay for your dad's car (at his requested price) only if he fixed the probs you mentioned.
SE's are nice, but not when you've got trap doors on 'em (the window 'n door thing u mentioned), plus to pass safety, adding some of the stuff up that you noticed (and maybe more that you don't even know about), could be a pretty penny and a half.
Life's short, live it up!
http://www.cardomain.com/id/csillag
