Looking at a KLDE motor

I am looking at doing a KLDE swap. I found an engine out of a 97 MX-6. The #6 bearing took a sh*t the guy says. I can get the motor for $50-$100.

Is this worth it or should I keep looking for a motor in better shape.

Would the whole motor have to be rebuilt or could you just change all of the bearings?

id get it, wheres klde for $100, i want one! Anyways id be rebuilding it with hipo parts for later on turbo. Or you can stroke it and get all NA engine

I am seriously thinking about getting it. I found a high performance kit on the internet for $1200 or the standard rebuild for $800

I would also have to find a VAF & a KLDE ECU.

$800 for a rebuild kit? No way.

I'm getting chrome piston rings from Autozone for $73. Gasket kit for $151 at www.stopshopanddrive.com and $60 for bearings from http://www.importperformanceparts.net ................. $284 total + shipping on just the bearings.

Of course, you'll need a couple tools for the rebuild if you don't have them already. But, still under $100 in tools and supplies I think.

Major Engine Kit: contains complete gasket set, set of pistons and rings, main bearings, rod bearings, thrust washers, timing belt, balance shaft bearings (if applicable), and a set of expansion plugs.
This kit does NOT contain camshaft, timing kit or oil pump
Pistons & Rings: Std., .020, .040.
Bearings: Std., 10, 20, 30.
We do not charge extra for oversize Pistons, Rings or M/R Bearings!
Please note: if you do NOT specify an Oversize when ordering, you will get Standard size
$569 for oem rebuild kit
My $800 was a little off I looked at the wrong rebuild kit. Still $569 for a OEM rebuild kit without the timing from import performance parts.

Still not too bad of a deal, but the funds are kind of tight. Got to try to find the best deal possible

Don't buy the kit until you tear the engine apart. Chances are #6 took a total dump and destroyed the bottom end. I'd take a real good look at it before handing over any cash.

$569 is like with new pistons, which I don't see the need for unless you overbore the engine. If you're just rehoning it, clean up the stock pistons with a Dremel and rering them. Then, it also includes an oil pump. Just clean the old one out with a strong oil cleaning agent like Seafoam and reuse it. The oil pump can be accessed easily after it's already installed to upgrade with a newer one at a later date without tearing down the whole engine, so it's not that imperative to do at the same time.

And if the bearing just went, all you probably need to do is get the crank journals shaved down. Mine is at a machine shop right now getting .020 shaved off. Only costing me $65 to get it down.

But I agree with the above post. Don't buy new rings and bearings until you know if you're getting anything shaved so you'd need bigger bearings or rings/pistons. Maybe your crank was already machined down, so if you got a new one, you'd need standard sized again.........etc.

sounds like more trouble than its worth. Why not find a good running klde for $300-400? You'll save money & lots of labor...there are PLENTY of those motors out there.

If you do get one, try to get a 98+ millenia motor, curved neck manifold & square KLZE runners, and the solid lifters make that the best USDM KL available.

i bought a wreaked probe gt for 300 and then got a second motor for free. both were perfect running engines, then got the MS8 maifold for 180 and the computer. im gonna rebuild durring winter

I'll have to look somewhere other than local. I called our salvage yard around here to get parts & they wanted $700 for a probe GT motor even though they did not have one. That's not including ecu or VAF.

Small towns are a rip off!!!!

That's probably what alot of yards would say. You're better off looking on ProbeTalk.com For Sale Forum. Some people are so desperate to get them out of thier garages, they'll ditch working motors for $100 if you come pick it up.

However, I went the rebuild route. I feel better knowing the condition of the engine I put in, and I wanted to do an engine rebuild anyways on my spare time..........I get bored. :confused2:

Can you put a 96+ motor in an obd 1 mx3 with a obd1 DE ecu ? I thought there were some diferences there that required extra work
