Failed SMOG 7times already, NEED HELP!!!!
Okey, so I just failed agian. I recently replaced me 02 sensors and corrected my timing.
I failed some of my past smogs due to emissions and timing incorrect by several small degrees.
I changed the spark plugs and changed oil just before my first smog test. I changed my air filter from aftermarket to stock.I tried "guarentee to pass" stuff, I am lost.
I REALLLY NEED HELP.
Here are my readings.

Looks like a bad EGR. I say that mostly because of the NO readings, since the EGR is responsible for the NO.
And when you said you checked the timing, do you mean the electrical or mechanical timing. If you've got a diesel sounding tick on your engine, chances are it's a failed timimg belt tensioner. If it's a failed tensioner, then that means the belt could have slipped a tooth, which would mean you would never pass smog unless you reset the timing belt.

I'm glad we don't have those tests over here. Seems like they can be a real problem.

If you saw the smog in So. Cal. some days, you'd understand the smog laws there. It's nasty, though I've seen nastier in the Phoenix valley.Originally posted by happyclown:

How do I check a EGR valve?
the way I check timing was: jump the two connects(test n grnd i think) then, use timing light at belt, loosen distrib. and adjust to spec, tighten distrib.
Did changing the cat. converter help you guys?
How are you guys driving around w/o passing smog?

That's the electrical timing. It doesn't much matter what that's set at anyways since once the computer figures it out after 50 starts or so, it'll retune the timing back to 10 degrees anyways. It'll only go back to your settings once you put it back in diagnostics.Originally posted by bobby:

What about your timing belt? Replaced it since your last emissions test?

To check your EGR, run the engine to operating temp, open the hood, rev/"blip" the motor rpm's a bit and you should see (or feel the EGR valve w/a finger) operate in synch with the increasing rpm's. The EGR valve response should appear as quickly as throttle response when you rev the motor.
High NO readings are the result of too-high combustion chamber temps. When the engine is warmed up, the EGR sends a bit of exhaust gas into the cylinders to lower the combustion temp. The higher the rpm's, the more the EGR opens. It's also possible to have a working EGR valve, but to have a blocked/partially blocked valve passage with carbon buildup. Never had this myself, but have read where others have opened the passage with a wire.
Before getting too deeply into the EGR itself though, just check it for apparent function w/throttle response per above, and check all vacuum and intake hoses for loose connections, cracks. Your HC results also look high. Replace your PCV valve, disty cap and rotor if that wasn't done. (Didn't see it mentioned.)
