What engine do I have?

Post by Trooper »

My friend and I are trying to replace the engine in my son's 92 MX-3. I purchased what I thought was a K series 2.5 engine from a bankrupt auction. This engine has a ford valve cover, so I assumed it came out of a Probe. Well when we started to install it in my son's car we had to change the flywheel and the IM is a straight neck, not curved like the K8 we just removed. The serial number on the engine is K8 289020 and K8101 and K81A1 are on the heads. Anyone got any idea what kind of engine this is?

Pretty sure that's a klde...a probe/mx-6 engine. 164hp. How much did you pay?

I believe waht you purchased was a KLDE, or the American version of the KLZE, it is found in Probes and has 164hp. Due to the lower compression ratios, people tend to go the forced induction route while modifying it.... hehehe Im just whispering ideas into your head :p

You can use the 1.8 intake I you need to. It will give you less HP, but will be an easier fit and all you have to do is hook up the vaccum lines the way you took them off.

you probably have a K8 with KL intake manifold and KL vavle cover.

if it was a KL it'd say KL101 not k8.

YES! They did. :)

MS-6
Eunos500
MS-8
MX-6
Clef
Ford Telstar
Lantis
XEDOS6

But the KF, even though it has a version of k8 heads, it reads KF on the block.

I only paid $150.00. We are in the process of changing the IM. One response said this may be a KFZE, how can I tell? Having to change the flywheel made me think that this may not be a KLDE.

if u have a K8 on the block and k8 on the heads, u have a k8. KFs have KF on the block and k8 heads, KLDEs/ZEs have KL on the block and KL on the heads.

you have a K8 im almost sure of it, take a pic of the engine if you can, but I wanna know whats on the cams.

According to my Mazda Parts Catalogue, its somewhat confusing with the heads numbering, as K8 and KF are used interchangeably. K8 and KF engines up to 970118 have K8 right cylinder head and KF left , after 970118 its KF on right and left. The only way to tell one from the other is to look at the block.

Re-shaped and re-sized gearshift lever. Best driveability mod you can do!
Extra thick soundproofing in the boot (trunk) to quieten my stainless steel exhaust system :)

I'm with Native American, I'll bet the bank its a 1.8L, hell I used the KL Intake and Ford Valve cover on my 1.8L for years.
