Ummm, I see a problem i think. You said your car is a 97....I think some one lied to you. Go here. As you can see, your dash style ended in 93... and judging by no dash speakers I don't believe it's the Eunos Presso version. Plus, If those leather seats are stock, definately not a 97; its a 93 SE.

If you look at the vents closely, you'll notice it has extra switches in the center set not on the 92-93. I think Mazda switched interiors a third time when they left North America.

It has to be newer because the seats are leather 94+ seats, the center armrest and E-brake are different and the steering wheel is from newer model Mazdas. The steering wheel was the first thing I noticed, my boy with a 96 626 has the same one.

Still seems odd...mazda only put leather seats in in 93 SE for 25 year anniversary. Anyways, doesnt really matter; wish I could answer your origonal question, but I have a 4 banger. So some1 else do it for me :2thumbsup:

Here's a very personal view; I don't think it will get universal support on this board :)

The best bang for your buck is to replace the paper filter element in the stock airbox with a K&N filter element. This link Part No. 33-2083. That way you retain the cold air inlet and the stowage for the bonnet (hood) support. You don't have all the hassle of fitting the aftermarket system, and it costs a lot less.

That much is incontrovertible. The next bit could support an argument.

My view is that the difference in air resistance between a typical aftermarket system and the one above is too small to be bothered with. If you really want the last ounce, just hook a 1 inch diameter flexible hose into the airbox (on the intake side of the filter element) and lead it round the front of the radiator to ensure it gets cold air.

OK, it doesn't look so sexy under the bonnet, but there are other ways of addressing that urge ;)

Your dash is exactly the same as my '97 UK model. Your leather seats have probably been switched with those from an earlier model SE.
Re-shaped and re-sized gearshift lever. Best driveability mod you can do!
Extra thick soundproofing in the boot (trunk) to quieten my stainless steel exhaust system :)

Got a ques. By "cold air inlet" do u mean the pipe thing that runs right down to the fender/ bottom of bumper? Does this make a differemce performance wise if it is missing?
Also the the K&N filter make a difference sound/performance wise? I am think of getting it since i need a new filter.
Thanks

those are not se seat they are the 94+ style and just because the seat are leather dosnt mean its an se, leather seats have and always will be optional on most cars. The specail edition was an optional package that came with leather seat.

Not sure what you mean by the pipe thing, but, if it's a closed-end conduit, it's the resonator, which I think is there to quieten the induction. Most people say it doesn't affect performance to remove it, but I don't know.

The "cold air inlet" to which I referred is the black plastic "flattened tube" across the front of the engine compartment, to which the bonnet stay is clipped for stowage.

There is a slight alteration to performance noticeable from the K&N, mainly a reduction of the "snatch" when you lift your foot off the accelerator when going slowly - which suggests it does offer less impedance to the airflow. It also seemed a bit more free revving over 4,500 rpm. I didn't go in for before-and-after dyno runs, so I can't say more. The big deal about the K&N is supposed to be that it doesn't rapidly clog up like a paper filter - the filter I removed when I bought the car was almost new, so the difference would have been small. It should be a lot greater after 25,000 miles.

I couldn't detect any difference to the sound on the MX-3 (my resonator is still in place); I like it that way :)

I just have the K&N snapped onto the original inlet to the box and I noticed a big difference in the sound after you hit the 3000 rev mark. It basically sounded like i was getting more grunt. Could be though, like somebody said, that my old filter was absolutely filthy.

It also seems does not bog down as much anymore. This is definitely a good bang for buck mod.

Re the age and spec of the car.

It's a 97 spec UK car, likr mine but with with optional leather.

I just got the 97 UK range brochure off e-bay - If I scan it do you think it could be posted here without Mazda complaining ?
