1.8 vs. 2.5 Transmission
1.8 vs. 2.5 Transmission
Hy Guys,
got a question:
already done the engine swap, got a KL-03 from
a Probe. Swapped it including the 2.5 Transmission,
but in my oppinion it does not pull that good.
For sure, top speed is great (funny seeing the
needle at 240km/h), but i think the acceleration
is not that good (just a feel).
Has anyone ever tested both transmissions on the
engine (or with the KL-ZE) ?

Re: 1.8 vs. 2.5 Transmission
The fifth gear ratio of the Probe is higher than the MX-3. The others are the same. Acceleration in top may therefore feel a bit disappointing, but it should be heaps better in first to fourth.

Re: 1.8 vs. 2.5 Transmission
Took the complete Engine including Transmission,
IM, ECU (KL07) and Air-Filter-Box.
Wireing-Harness is from the K8, just connect the
CEL output to the "HOLD"-Lamp. Also I changed
the front Valve-Cover, didn`t like the "Ford"-Sign
on it *g*

Very nice, and I see you managed to get the straight neck IM in. I was wondering whether the sharp bend in the ribbed hose is a bit restrictive? A curved neck Millenia (Xedos 9) IM could be better?

Re: 1.8 vs. 2.5 Transmission
Only Problem is to find one, Xedos 9 are very rarely here in Germany,
parts also.
Also I had no probs with fitting this IM in,
but there is no more space between Air Cleaner
and battery.

Hello TK
I'll wirite english so that everybody can understand it.
The gear ratios are the same, exept the 5th which is longer. I think the 2,5l tranny from the MX-6 has different gear ratios.

Re: 1.8 vs. 2.5 Transmission
Yes. 3rd gear. On the old 1.08 tranny have huge problems on them. The snycro on 3rd gear always go. I hear that the AT trannies have problems too. I have stock one..last me three years...then it blew...bought a used one...oneyear later...3rd gear again...then drive like that for about a year..then last i upgraded to a 97...mx-6 tranny. Suppose to be stronger trannies. Been in for over a year now..and no problems.

i have heard the final drive on the 2.5L trannys are a bit higer than ours making the gears a bit longer

Re: 1.8 vs. 2.5 Transmission
I have a probe transmission, and it's exactly the same.
I did alot of research on this topic a while back, and found out that mx3/probe/mx6 have same exact transmissions and gear ratios. Only 626 has a higher final ratio so your top speed will be higher.

nope...the transmissions are virtually identical including the final drive and all 5 gear ratios. There is No taller 5th gear.Originally posted by IanL:

Re: 1.8 vs. 2.5 Transmission
The MX-3 and Probe GT tranny are exactly the same. Thats why a Probe GT accelerates faster than the MX-6, cause it has lower gear ratios. The MX-6 and 626 have the same tranny cause theyre more for cruising. The MX-3 and Probe GT were more for sport.

Re: 1.8 vs. 2.5 Transmission
That intake manifold is not a straight neck, for the record. That is the kind that is from a domestic ford probe. They fit in the mx-3 with no problem whatsoever.

Ian may well have been talking about the UK spec Probe which has the same overall gearing as an MX-6 or 626.
