I have a 92 MX-3 and the best we've seen is 33mpg @ 70mph. Better go recalculte again. Also the gas tank is not 12 gallons, it's actually 13.2 gallons

doesn't matter what it holds, fact is I filled it to the very top, gas near cap, drove 162 miles, filled it to the same spot again 4.1 gallons. This is not a hard thing people.

There may have also been more/less air pockets in your tank from parking at a different angle.
Not only should you follow David C.'s advice by doing a full tank, but you should also do this repeatedly and average the results to get a real-world reading.

Ok first off, 33mpg on the highway goin 80mph with the AC on is NOT inconceivable. First you gotta remember that 80mph in 5th gear is like.....3K RPM? I dunno the exact numbers. So that is like 35mph in 3rd gear. Low RPM's = High gas milage.
Second. He said he filled his tank ABOVE where it was when he tripped his odometer (meaning more gas put in than taken out) which means the ~39MPG figure is lower than it should be. If he'd put it exactly where it was (which from outside the take would seem a little impossible) the MPG number would be above 39MPG.
Third, I do agree with Dave. You should run it until the light comes on before filling it up. More "average" number. I mean there are different things that affect gas mialage such as, ambient air temp, ambient air pressure, hill incline, wind resistance, impurities in gas, etc. So a better way is to use a full tank.
I would love to hear the outcome because I got about 37MPG on the highway earlier this summer. If yur breakin 40 I'd love to know what yur doin right.

The MX-3 GS comes stock with a final drive that doesn't produce the best mpg numbers. Anyway, you definitely can't get 39 mpg at 80 with the A/C on with a ZE!! This weekend I didn't go past 75 though, most was 65mph driving. Anything above 55mph is where it starts to cut into gas milage. I'd love to see what I'd get going 55mph on the highway, other then getting run over by a truck :). Yes my odometer is correct. I've been with my girlfriend for 3 years and have driven the same drive for 3 years, I know the exact milage to anywhere down there. Besides I know how far it is exactly to work using more then 3 cars and it's all the same, so I'm going to have to say it's correct.

Like I said I got 37MPG on the way to the lake. Not scorching, but a hot enuff to keep the windows up with the A/C on. I hit 134MPH on the way there (not consistantly, averaged about 75-85mph), so I'd say that my "driving style" pretty much kept my gas milage at average. Keep in mind my car is stock other than the 2 12" subwoofers I have in back. It took 2 tanks of gas to get there and back. Yes 50+MPG is pretty outlandish but 39 I could see very easily.
It's like they say, the factory rating is NOT cast in stone. Just like Dave claims a 15 sec quarter mile with slipping clutch, and Mazda claims a 16.8. Maybe his car actually did get the MPG he claims. There are a ton of veriables that contribute. Maybe it was just a perfect day to drive.
P.S. where did the ZE come in?

There's a timeslip on MX-3.com, and I have video of it, which Darin has had for like 2 years now and still hasn't captured. :darin:
