Should I buy this?

Post by danwink »

Hello everyone. I have a 1993 Miata that I enjoy a great deal. I am looking at a MX-3 V6 for sale w/ 120K miles and some mods (custom exhaust, etc.). My question is 1) do these cars accomodate taller drivers ok? and 2) is 2K or best offer a reasonable price?
Anything I should look for?

When buying a car you should almost always get a stock car. Usally cars with custom exhaust, shift knobs, interior mods, etc. drive their cars to s---. Take me word for it bud...

I don't agree with that statement. I'm sure there are dozens of examples of modified cars on this bulletin board that are not beaten. I am going to inspect the car and certainly won't buy a beater, however I have modified many previous cars and I have been very anal about maintenance on all of them. If the guy selling the car is similar I am not worried about the mods...

That's why the best question to ask someone when buying a car is "Why are you selling it?"
If there IS something wrong with the car they'll either give you some quickly improvised answer that you can tell is BS, or they'll level with you and answer honestly about any problems.
If it's a good car they'll have a believable answer for why they're getting rid of it. Then again, it might have a problem they're not aware of. But even then, you can usually tell how well taken care of a car is just by looking it over closely and giving it a test drive.
[ September 04, 2002: Message edited by: voltaire ]

Whatever Dan, it's up to you. I can tell ya one thing for sure though, most modified cars will SEEM ok when you take it for a test drive and look it over but there is a very good chance of you running into a serious problem within weeks of your purchase.
There is ALWAYS a reason why somone sells a car as old as the MX-3. It's usally not because they just want another car.
Personally i bought a completly stock 92' mx-3 with 115,000km on it for $6,500 canadian and 25,000km later it's still running in perfect condition. My friends on the other hand all bought cars with (custom this, custom that, bodykit this, etc) and they are ALL having stupid problems. Why? Because the owner(s) before beat the s--- out of the car. Seriously, when is the last time you've seen a nicely done up car drive the speed limit and not rev their cars n' s--- at other done up cars at the light...NEVER. use your head bud...

After all those mods, $2,000 sounds kinda low. I'd be careful.

I would agree in general about the thrashed modified car statement, they really do push their cars hard. My younger brother is one of those boy racer types and it hasnt taken him long to destroy his car.
When I bought my MX3 in Feburary, it said it had done 64 thousand KMs (about 40 thousand miles) and I was inclined to believe it. The car was the best example in this city for its price. There was no obvious rust and it was very sound structurally and mechaninicaly. I bought it for 9000 NZ$ (roughly 4500 US$) and I am still pleased with the purchace.
I really recomenmd looking for exactly what you want for the quality you can afford, and do the best you can to prevent yourself getting ripped off. A little time shopping around might save you a great deal in the long run.

The question of whether or not a car is driven hard is subjective. I mean i bought my car with a ZE installed and 64000 original miles, would that mean my cars been beat to high hell? My GS has lots of custom work but i've never even floored it. Take that for what its worth
