Car overheated on highway (Coolant boiled over and spaye

Post by zytariuk »

I was on the highway doing 140km/h when i happened to look down at my temperature gauge and noticed that the needle was right up in the red zone  ! I immediately pulled over and popped my hood. The coolant boiled over and spray out the rap cap (the entire coolant tank thing was empty too). I turned the car back on after a few hours and cranked the heat setting inside the car...no heat came out. I let the car idle for a bit and still had NO heat at all coming out (that's with the heat control cranked)!?!?!?
What would be the most probable cause?
- Did a sensor go or something (if so, what sensor)?
- Could it be my water pump (only got 130,000km on the engine)?
- Head Gasket of some sort?
- Could it be my radiator?
I can't see there being an air bubble in the system because a friend and I did a complete collant flush like 3-4 months ago and the car never over heated until now...
[ August 27, 2002: Message edited by: zytariuk ]

Once you have filled it back up, keep a close eye on the temp guage and check the fluid level frequently. You might have a slow leak somewhere so whenever you drive some place start looking for antifreeze on the ground, indicating a possible water pump leak. if its a head gasket you won't get to far the next time you drive before it starts to overheat again. there are other ways to look for head gasket problems. check the engine compression, check the spark plugs, check the exhaust for white smoke and sweet smell.
If your not leaking any fluid or burning it in the cylinders than yes the radiator could be clogging up and not flowing enough.
Another possibility could be a stuck thermostat. small percentage here.
Another possability could be the cooling fans might not be working. make sure there coming on when the temp guage goes up or when the AC is switched on.
Andy P. 93 GS

yea sounds like a thermostat, cheap fix. Could be stuck closed. before did the temp ever get 2 hot or not hot at all? When I 1st got my GS it had a cracked themostat. It was stuck open and water wasnt getting hot fast enough. It stayed cool all the time, heater didnt get hot. I replaced it, all good now.
[ August 27, 2002: Message edited by: Custommx3 ]

Update: I took the car into Central Ontario Tire today and they topped up the collant and replaced the thermostat. They showed me the old thermostat and the spring that controls it was rubbing against the center metal thing, causeing it to stick sometimes. All is good now :]! Thanks for your help...
