6 Speed

Post by millionflame »

I am currently looking for a 6 speed transmission for a GS. It should also work with a ZE, for future use as well. Does anyone know where I can find a 6 speed?
Thanks, Aiden. :)

The only way is a fully custom gearbox. www.quaife.com http://www.xtrac.com
[ May 30, 2002: Message edited by: David Coleman ]

why would you want a 6 speed? What would be the advantage? The K series have nice fat torque curves that negate the use of a 6 speed close ratio.

If you spaced them right, and had alot of power, an added 6th gear would help top speed.
And if you were going for a 12000RPM KL beast motor, going to ~5.50-6.25:1 final gearing, a 6th gear would make it streetable. But then again, where are you gonna find 116 octane on the street?

david is 100% right the mx3-v6 gs could use a 6 and more power would be created but on a klze with good tuning and ratios there would be a noticable differance look in to the new tibron it hs a 6 speed it may fit they have used mazda parts in the past.

What about the trannys from celica GT-S or the one from the honda (acura) rsx type-s??? Think it would take alot of work to make it fit?

Thanks, I'll try a custom one, or something from another car. :)
And, a 6 speed IS necessary for the ZE if you want to use all the HP, not just torque...at least, in my mind.
~A

The thing about 6spd's that are the same size as 5spds is that the gears have to be thinner to fit in the same space. That means the gearbox is generally not as strong, which is supported by the fact that there are several new celica GTS guys on their 2nd and 3rd gearbox within the first year...

He said the gates are narrow too, so some fools out there drop it in to 2nd while trying to put it in to 4th, KABOOM!
Just stick with a 5-speed, its alot cheaper.

Exactly, i think the miata's with the 6-speed have the same final gear as the 5-speed tranny ones. Not worth the time or money.

I agree with Dave..lots of celica guys have had more than one tranny and toyota also delayed their release of the 2002 celica to november cause of tranny probs..stick with a five speed, unless of course u have money and want to do it then by all means go ahead..
goodluck and let us know what u do
