Re: life span of the 1.8?
I bought my 1.8L V6 (92 GS) with 121,000 miles on it and I have nearly 135,000 now. I hit redline regularly and even touch the fuel cut once in a while, around 7700rpm. It's running like a sewing machine, although I'm probably overdue for a tuneup. I plan on keeping this little beast until it's dead.

Mine just hit 55k and is still running nicely...<P>I thought it was a no-no to run synthetic in a high-mileage vehicle

No, it's a no-no to run synthetic in a brand new engine. Although it's not a huge concern these days since rings seat almost immediately, but it has been stated that the use of synthetic oil in a new engine will not allow the rings to seat properly and thus lead to high oil consumption.

i didn't buy my mx new, i got with 87k miles. it runs pretty smooth, never makes any funny noises or vibrations. i don't know if it'll die tomorrow or 100k miles from now so i try my best to take care of it, but of course i bring it to redline quite regularly ---> how else can i enjoy my mx?

take good care of it and it will last you for a long time mine has 165k on it and is running fine(not like new of course) but besides some ticks under the hood it sounds good for the mileage.the only stuff i'v had to replace is distributor, power steering pump, and exhaust.

Well, from personal experiance, they start to crap out at around 135K-150K, my first 1.8L made it to 250K but started with the problems at about 150K, but i was young and dumb and never took care of it. my recent one blew two pistons and put a nice hole in the head after a race with a civic (witch i still won on 4 cylindes, i'm just lucky)at 139K, but my 2.2L looks to be more promising.
