Radar detector help

I jsut got a radar detector and it plugs into the cigarette lighter. My lighter doesn't work so i open up the dash around the lighter and there's nothing plugged into it. and it doesn't look like there's anythign laying around to plug into it. anyone know what i should be lookin for.

hooked to the cigerette lighter is just a 12v + wire and a ground so just run a + from the fuse pannel and then ground it. if it was me though i would hard wire the radar detector. this will make it look much nicer.

just wondering tho, does the radar detector need to be showing out the windshield or can you hide it under the seat or something?

If you get caught with a radar detector is Ontario, Canada the ticket is ~C$2200.00. My friend has gotten caught twice.

hmm, k<p>If that didnt work, what i was thinking was hiding one in an A-pillar guage or something. Dont know how or when, i just wanna try it for ****s and giggles

Has anyone ever tried taking a radar detector apart, mounting the sensor outside the drivers compartment say in the grill and wiring it so the LED display was in the inside maybe molded into the dash somewhere? I always thought that could be fun to try. I wouldn't tear apart a brand new radar detector but I do have an old one sitting around that I deemed useless when cops started hitting me with their Laser radar guns. He was laughin at me "radar detector didn't go off did it?" "No sir" "Heheh... Thats cause I got you on Laser radar" The smug bastard said, smiling at me like I should be happy for him.... umm yeah well anyway, the stealth detector idea could be nice. An article I read once on how not to get tickets indicated that if you get pulled over and the cop sees the radar detector, he's not going to go easy on you. If you don't have the detector and say you have a fairly good excuse, and the officer is in a hurry to meet his friend officer Bob over at Krispy Kreme for a honey glazed and coffee. You might get let off with a warning. So rather than have to quick pluck the radar detector off the windshield and throw it under the seat, I like the idea of having one that doesn't look like you have one. Sorry for rambling, very slow boring night at work...

Making a remote antenna detector is very possible. There were a number of companies making remote mounted detectors out of Cincinnati Microwave units (now Escort)and some others back in the 1980's. They worked ok, they all seemed to suffer some sensitivity loss. They really amounted to nothing more than desoldering the antenna, creating a small, watertight circuit box in the grill in front of the radiator, and running wires back to the guts that were mounted under the dash, or actually in the dash. The creative ones even used small plastic flip-down doors to hide it if need be. The detectors got to be so small I think a lot of the manufacturers kind of figured it wasnt worth bothering making remote mounts anymore (those old Escorts were huge.)

I remember reading an article about a company a couple of years ago that made detectors that would be custom installed in your car. The sensor would be installed on the hood and would look similar to your washer nozzles. The LED's would then be installed into your dash. If they are still around you could probably find them with some internet searching.

there are now many radar dectors out that are very seatlhy. Some are by far better than others and I will be looking for a new one very soon so I am starting to read up on them.<p>The Escort SRX sounds bad *** ....

A guy that comes into work says what they usually do is make you run over your own radar detector, expecially if its a good one, his friend had one and they pulled him over, so what he did is bought a good one and a el cheepo walmart one, and when the officer asked him for the detector, he handed over the cheepo walmart one, and he said his friend had a smirk on his face and he was driving over it.<p>I believe they either use a K or X band in ontario<p>[ June 03, 2003: Message edited by: Nd4SpdSe ]</p>

Wow Canda sounds pretty harsh on the whole radar detector thing. There's nothing illegal about them here in Wisconsin USA, it's just that when the police see one they assume you have a habit of ignoring speed limits, so they get a little annoyed, and annoyed police are no fun.
