What amp do i need?

Post by zytariuk »

First off, I just got TWO (2) of these http://www.rockfordfosgate.com/rftech/library/1997/5_Subwoofers/RFP-1212-TS.pdf<p>My question is, what kind of amp do i need? I was looking at two rockford fosgate amps over at http://www.rockfordfosgate.com/ez2/ModelInfo/Mod elInfo.asp?PrevPage=BuildResults&CompareResults=Y&ItemKey=10061227,%2010061230 but i don't understand the 400 W X 2 @ 2 Ohms RMS Vs. 400 W X 2 @ 4 Ohms Bridged RMS...(which one do i want?)<p>I know that i want an amp that will pump out 400watts RMS to EACH sub. But i just don't know what amp will do it. Im not looking for a cheap *** amp either.<p>[ April 19, 2003: Message edited by: zytariuk ]</p>

you would be better off getting a 1ch amp but RF doesn't make one that is 800rms at 2ohms its either 600 or 1500 so more power is better than not enough so i would recomend this one if you wanna go all RF. http://www.rockfordfosgate.com/ez2/ModelInfo/ModelInfo.asp?ItemKey=10058985&CategoryDesc=Power Amplifiers

Rockford 1000bd, 1000watts RMS for about 100 dollars less than the 1500 bd. The zeb.come sells them for like 389, and shipping is free for orders over 100 bucks.

How can this amp put out 400RMS to EACH sub when it says 500 W X 1 @ 4 Ohms RMS. I thought that meant that only 500w RMS $ 4 Ohms can go to ONE sub...

So i guess putting 250w RMS to a sub that can support 400w RMS will damage it eventually blow it, since underpowering is just as bad as overpowering?

just because it is a 400watt rms doesnt mean you still cant fire 250 rms to it, i know some people who have been using 500watt rms subs with an amp that is only putting out 200 rms to each and they have been doing this for about 2 years now, i am not an expert on subs, i know how to hook the **** up and i know more then just the basics, but i think with that amp and those subs, you will still get a thumping system without any problems

The subs are DVC not SVC. If he has the DVC 4 ohm, his wiring options are 1 ohm or 4 ohms. and the the RF amp does not like 1 ohm, and if he wires to 4 ohms hes getting only 500 watt rms.

<hr></blockquote><p>If you have that amp wired to 2 OHMS it will put out 1000 watts RMS(when you receive the amp, they give u a paper that shows the rating of what the amp actually was tested at, mine was tested at 1124 watts at 2 OHMS) So as you can see, the amp is actually under rated....if you have two 4 ohm subs you can wire them in parallel to present a 2 ohm load on your amp, which would give you 500 watts RMS to each sub, or however you want to put it, 1000 watts RMS total.

like loudsubz said, that amp is ready to go for 1 ohm or 4 ohm, running it at one ohm will smoke your amp quciker then an mx-3 getting smoked by a a car with a real engine.i would personally if i got that amp would run it at 4 ohms and not 2, even though 2 isnt as bad as one ohm, its still not made to support that volume at a constant level all the time, i say if you wanna pound the hell out of them, buy a audiobahn amp, well worth the money and will tear **** up<p>
peace
<hr></blockquote><p>
What the heck?? That amp is 2 OHM stable. Running that amp at 4 OHMS is just wasting power. Of course if you run it at 2 OHM at full power all of the time you will fry it, but what moron does that? Do you blast your system all of the time??? No, at least i hope not or you will be deaf real quick. That amp is totally safe at 2 OHMS. The amp doesnt determine the OHM load, it only places limits on how few OHMS you can go. THe speaker impedence and wiring set up determins the OHM load on an amp.

ok i wanna clear a lot of stuff up for all of you
1. the only way underpowering a sub will hurt it is id it is "dirty power" or full of distortion.
2. he said the amp will not be good at 1ohm. he said nothing about 2ohm.
3. the amp is stable at 2ohm and is a good amp so use what it has by wiring 1vc on each sub in parallel to get a 2ohm load which will put 500rms to each sub.
4. if an amp is stable at 2ohms you can play it loud at that for as long as you want until it gets hot which a good amp won't get hot. i have mine at 1.3ohms and play it loud all the time and have no problems and it doesn't get hot.<p>just wanted to clear all this up. that amp will be perfect for those subs if wired at 2ohm. should be loud in the right box.
