Questions about setting up a video system...(long)
Questions about setting up a video system...(long)
Ok, in a few weeks I'll be setting up a video system in my car. At the moment I'm collecting parts.
My immediate plan is to simply have a PS2 hooked up to an LCD screen. I may do a computer at a later date, but for now, the PS2 is fine (DVD's and Video games).
I currently have the LCD screen, and my power inverter is on the way. I'm going to be buying a new CD deck with aux inputs.
Ok now... I dont own a PS2 yet, but I own an xbox and a gamecube, and I know that both have non-generic RCA plugs for video/audio hookup. What i mean is, on one end is the RCA cables, and on the other end is a console-specific plug.
So my question comes down to wiring.
My theory is that I will hardwire the LCD screen into a 12v wire somewhere (the cord it came with ends in a cigarette lighter plug, so I'll need to cut that and hardwire it). So first question: What's the best place to hardwire it? And in the same stroke, where's the best place to wire in the power inverter?
Ok, once my power inverter and screen are getting juice, I'll need to make sure everything runs. Tell me where (if) I'm wrong here. Keep in mind, the RCA cables coming from the screen are truncated on one end into the single plug (three rca cables on one end, single plug-in on the monitor end)
So... the playstation will draw its power from the power inverter, which is hardwired. The lcd Screen is hardwired. My cd deck says it has aux inputs (which i assume means the red and white audio RCA jacks) so... I'll cut and hardwire the video cable (yellow) coming from the playstation directly to the one coming from the monitor (can you even hardwire RCA cable? is it any different from regular wire?). then the audio rca cables from the playstation will go directly to the aux inputs on my cd deck, to output sound through my car speakers. the audio cables from the monitor will be left alone.
so correct me if i need correcting. do i need an audio input adapter inbetween the PS2 and the cd deck?
help me, please.
-Abs

what kinda deck you got? They make audio/video units that hook into some decks. Let me know then I might be able to shed more light.

For the inverter, treat it as if it was an amp and wire it directly upto the battery, they can draw alot of power (depending on the size of the inverter and the devices plugged in) and your incar wiring might not like you after it...Any iverter will say to connect it directly to the battery if your drawing more that 150w
Your wiring souns good on the audio/video aspect.
[ April 13, 2003: Message edited by: Nd4SpdSe ]

i was leaning towards grabbing this one.
how do I wire directly to the battery?
-Abs
[ April 13, 2003: Message edited by: Absath ]

run the + wire from the inverter to the batt then ground it to the chasis.

Careful with cutting your cigarette lighter adapter from the lcd power connector. Some of those adapters have voltage regulation/conversion circuitry inside (and some are just straight-through, too). Many have an integral fuse that you would want to keep in the circuit, too (sometimes the fuse is hidden behind the tip (center conductor) of the adapter).

(as opposed to cutting the wire right before the big cig lighter adapter thing)
-Abs

mine has a fuse mounted in the dvd player that the screen connects to for its power
