Re: Surging to 3500 RPM's on 92 GS

Reset the computer (battery negative cable off, push brake pedal for 30 seconds) and then drive around for a while to see if any codes come back. O2 sensors and Coolant temperature sensors can definitely affect idle and driveability. Also if there are air bubbles in the coolant system then coolant ...

Surging to 3500 RPM's on 92 GS

Basically when the car was warmed up it would after being driven a while start to surge from 2000 to 3500 rpms and when you gave it gas it would sputter like it was going to die. I thought it was my dist so I did the HEI and external coil mod. It runs better now, but last night on the way home from ...

Re: HEI Mod problem.....won't run?

since the orange wire is the one telling the igniter to ignite, and it only works when you have that wire connected to the dizzy and not the HEI unit...I would suspect the HEI unit. That was my first thought. Well, I got it going finally. My dad reminded me of car that he had that did the same thin...

Re: HEI Mod problem.....won't run?

Thanks for the diagram, I was unable to locate that one. I went out and sure enough they were not hooked up right, so I reinstalled it and it worked. Ran great, but I dont know if it is the source of my RPM jumping as I only let it run for about 20 minutes and went in to take care of other things. H...

Re: HEI Mod problem.....won't run?

Did you rip out the metal prong inside the disty that connects to the old coil? That seems to missing from some FAQ's That prong has to come out or you will be running the old coil still and not the HEI I was only doing the HEI mod and not the coil mod. I thought you only disconnected the coil brac...

HEI Mod problem.....won't run?

I have a 92 GS that is giving me fits. When warmed up it runs like a$$ from time to time, RPM's shooting up and bogging when you give it gas. If you shut it off for 5 minutes it will run good for 5-10 minutes then start over again. If its cool out, I might can get home from work (25 miles) without a...

Re: 5th gear compatability

I saw a writeup about swapping 5th gear and installing a LSD into the 5-speed transmission, but I can't seem to locate it right now. If I do, I'll put it up here also. Basically you'll need to drop the transmission, take the rear cover off to expose 5th gear and remove it, then install the replacem...

Re: 5th Gear Missing! 92 1.8L GS

5th gear is a common problem with the Mazda MTX tranny in the 90's. Mazda and Ford in the US used ATF in the MTX even thought their specs say to only use ATF only below 0deg C. You mentioned that it was low on fluid. If it has been that way for awhile this usually means that the 5th gear syncro in ...

Re: 5th Gear Missing! 92 1.8L GS

It sounds to me like someone put the transmission together wrong. If 5th worked perfectly until the tranny was worked on, but now doesn't, then you have established the time frame of the problem starting. I don't know if it's possible to put the individual gear in backwards (I've heard of people do...

Re: 5th Gear Missing! 92 1.8L GS

Ok, I checked the fluid level and it was VERY low. I have that resolved now and it shifts much smoother than before. However I still have no 5th gear. What I find unusual about this is that its not going in then popping out, its just not there unless you lean very hard then you catch and edge of it ...

Re: 5th Gear Missing! 92 1.8L GS

Welcome to the site. There is not an adjustment for the shifting rod/arm and the Mx-3 does have the problem of the "falling shift lever". You can search for the anti-drop brackets that were made for the shift levers else where on the site. A temporary fix on my buddies Mx was just ...

5th Gear Missing! 92 1.8L GS

First off, wonderful site! I just picked up a "basket case" 92 GS with 189,000 miles from a friend for $200.00. They had some electrical problems they couldnt sort out. Turned out to be the aftermarket alarms starter kill! Anyway, after a major cleaning, new plugs, dist cap, rotor botton, ...
