Vacuum leak, Almost positive. I have the exact same thing,
but not bad enough to happen when moving, only a slight surge
of about 3-500 rpm, but other times where this is a problem
Ive seen it fluctuate 2-3k rpm.

Try summit, if you know the actual bolt.
you might be able to find out from the miata guys, I've been told its
practically the same engine. ARP makes great stuff, and is usually pretty
good for price.

side note, ive went through 3 alternators, none have worked..
Ive jumpered the lead out to the battery to no avail.
I know the one wire(on the conector) is for the lamp, what it the other wire
for? there no reason this thing shouldnt chrage.

Mark, i think thats your name, do you happen to have an alternator for
a 1.6 DOHC? ive tryed 2 already, but no luck. give me a shout at 905 932 6785. im also havin some timing issues, would like an mx guy to check it out.

Not new to the mazda's, I currently own an 04 Rx-8, and an 88 Rx-7 convertable.
